Question:

I'm waiting on some waitlists to come through, and I have a feeling they might not convert UNTIL April 15th. When schools want an answer ON the 15th, is there a certain time-limit? Do they expect an answer early in the morning, or up until midnight?

Any thoughts or experiences to share?

Thanks.

I am not in the same position myself, but I would suggest emailing the departments directly. Let them know about your situation and ask by what time they need a notification. Good luck!

I am also in this pickle.  I have an two acceptances but am waiting to hear from 4 more schools! I e-mailed one on of the schools I was accepted to and asked them about an extension. Still haven't heard anything back yet. Is this normal to only have heard from 2/6 schools 5 days before April 15? It seems like the 4 I haven't heard from, haven't told anybody (according to the results search) -- stressful and an expensive waiting game.

On a similar but different question, if you are on a waitlist, will you definitely hear by the fifteenth? (barring those weird three month later things that seem to crop up on occasion).  Or, in the case of some situations, do committees sometimes need time to figure out who they're giving spots to after they've gotten replies from all their accepted students.

Aka, I'm just chilling in my nervous breakdown and wondering if silence on the fifteenth means insta-kill to this year's hopes and dreams.

I am kind of in the same situation still waiting on answer from 4 schools, 2 or which are my top picks. I think as long as you let the department know by email by 5pm on the 15th you should be fine. My advice is to contact the schools again by the end of this week, if they still don't answer by then.

I have declined to three schools that I have been accepted to, withdrew from one waiting list and am waiting on two schools to open their spots up!! I mean I have a good school to turn back to if the other two waiting spots don't open up but still ... If possible, I would love to have my options before the 15th.....man o man

Anyone with offers from MA/ Boston schools: the 15th is Patriots Day and Marathon Monday. So, schools are closed I think (at least mine is). I have no idea if this affects the 15th deadline, but just thought I'd point it out, in case it might.

From what I've been able to gather, committees generally have a pretty good idea of who is highest in priority for them. Most committees separate their waitlisted students by period, so if you're a Victorianist and their first choice in that period declines the offer, you'd get that spot as long as you're in the top portion of the waitlist. It would be useful to contact the departments you're waitlisted at and inquire about your position if you haven't already. Some schools will let you know exactly, some are more vague. But it's worth a shot. One of the schools my friend applied to actually let her know her exact chance of getting in...like the percent chance. That's a pretty rare situation but still good information to have if it's available to you.

I did Email them a while ago to ask.  All they said was that they evaluated the WL folks in the adcomm to choose, and that there were no "positions" assigned.  So I don't think I'll get much information there.

But thanks for the advice. :)
