liszt85 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Hi, I've been admitted to the MS in music technology program at Gatech (http://gtcmt.coa.gatech.edu/?p=123). Its a relatively new program and I was wondering if anybody knows about how well regarded the program might be and how good my job prospects would be if I were to do this MS. I have been offered a tuition waiver and a $1500pm stipend. Would this amount (before taxes) be good enough for a couple in Atlanta to lead a simple life? How much do 1BR apartments near the campus rent for?
TKassis Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 I'm also looking for housing options around Georgia Tech. The Georgia Tech housing website has a pdf file with nearby accommodation. From what I've seen it is cheaper to rent off campus as you can get your own bathroom and small kitchen for the same price as you would pay for campus housing which gives you a shared bathroom and kitchen (Graduate Living Center). I'm considering living off campus, but I currently live in Ohio and it is proving to be hard to find something reasonable. I don't want to sign a lease without seeing the room first :-) Good luck with your hunting.

Hey, I have decided to attend OSU instead but before I'd decided to do that, I was seriously considering Gatech. I then registered with www.promove.com I live in India and they called me about 15 mins later! A very professional sounding, friendly person talked to me and noted down all my preferences. Its a free service. They will then make you a profile on one of their pages with personalized comments about properties that you may want them to check out for you. All you have to do is read his/her comments (will be personalized to your needs that you'd told them over the phone) and then check a box if you're interested. If you are, they will follow that up and negotiate prices, etc and will give you the best deal. They will also have photographs that are unlike the ones you see on craigslist. They will have the actual photos of the place. All you have to do in return is tell the housing company when you move in or when you go to visit (or send friends to check out the place for you) that you got their information from www.promove.com They have some agreement and that is how promove gets paid for their work. I think they're an awesome service and you should check it out!
harishutd Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I have made it to Georgia Tech in the Masters for Computer Science. Any one have an idea as to what financial documents the grad school is asking the grad students for ?
y2kwizard Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Hey guys. I'll be starting my PhD in Electrical Engineering at Tech next year. I think I'll probably be living on campus my first year, to get a feel for the area and develop some friendships. After that, I hope to move off-campus. I am currently residing off-campus, and I prefer being able to go home and relax without much hubbub surrounding me.
greekthunder76 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 y2k: I am currently at tech and my only advice for you is do NOT live in Georgia Tech housing. It is terrible. If you want to live near campus, check out apartments in midtown. I know the post-biltmore apartments are very highly thought of among students living in them and they are basically on the border of campus. Please look at places other than tech housing.
y2kwizard Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Greekthunder: Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that people were so dissatisfied with Tech's housing. Is there anything in particular that people complain about? I'll definitely check out the Post-Biltmore apartments now that you mention them.
greekthunder76 Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I would take a look at tech's housing contract, it's on the housing website. basically they place absolutely all liability on the students. they do not care about the student's well being in the least. I am misfortunate enough to be in one of their apartments this school year. They have been doing construction on my building since AUGUST. This was not announced to the students until after the construction started, well after we moved in and had no chance to cancel our contracts. and it's not light construction, it is very loud and intrusive, monday-saturday, 8am on the dot every day. Also, if you can find some of the things they fine you for you will see how ridiculous they are. I know one fine that they love is the "furniture improperly arranged upon moveout" fine ($30). Basically they make you pay them $30 to move a chair from one room to another. I could go on and on about how much I hate the housing department but I've ranted enough for now. Let me know if you have any more questions about it.
