I know this sounds stupid, but I was making my webpage. It seems a common trend to obfuscate one's email id in the academia to protect from spam mails. Given that, would it be unwise to link one's social media account of say facebook, twitter to one's website?

I am not a PhD student and I don't have a website of my won in acdemia. Having said that, I woould never link my social media like FB(hate FB anyway) and twitter to my academic website because of spam, privacy and also to keep my personal life separate. I would integrate linkedin though.

I personally have my Facebook secured to the T, and I have two Twitter profiles.... One for professional and one for personal.

Like nehs said, I do have my LinkedIn integrated to everything though.. and I also integrate both my FB and professional Twitter.

I used to have a "no professors on facebook" rule but it was useless because everyone friends everyone on there and it's not like I could decline a friend invitation from a professor I met at a conference. Once there was one, there was no reason not to accept invitations from all of my colleagues. Turns out it's one of the popular ways of staying in touch and networking in my field. I still have a "no students" rule that I intend to keep, but generally I think it's safer to assume that everything you post could be discovered and nothing is really private and confidential. Even having two accounts doesn't seem safe so I wouldn't post anything I wouldn't want read by my colleagues. That said, I wouldn't out right link my professional accounts to my social media accounts, that doesn't seem appropriate either.

I'm with the fuzzylogician on this one. Though, my social media use is purely public. I never put anything on social media that I don't want my dream someday-employer or my great aunt to ever put eyes on. I keep hoping that FB will go the way of myspace, so I can ditch it, too, but no luck so far. If I used FB for more personal things that required the use of privacy settings, I wouldn't link it. It's pretty simple. If you don't want some people seeing what you put up on social media, don't link to that social media. For me, that translates directly into: don't put it on social media. Once you've placed something online, it's always online. Someone will eventually see something they weren't supposed to.

I wouldn't, unless it something purely professional like LinkedIn as others have mentioned. Or if your department/ college has a Facebook page (I believe my department has but I have never actually looked at it haha) you can leave a link for that. Whatever you want people to know about you from your website you can put directly on your website.
