I am the OP here. Thanks for all your advice. I had written about my dilemma and received great insight into my specific situation. I was super excited about the opportunity. However I have decided to turn down the offer. They have still not told me the pay which is a deal-breaker for me to decide on taking up vs non - taking up.i asked a lot of people in payroll, then HR, the dept chair and no one is telling me my hourly rate. Seriously, they got to be kidding me! I am not motivated to go teach on a Sat morning 7 am 60 miles away without this information. More over I feel I took up the job offer in an impulse decision and now I'm wary of the travel and ttime investment. Any suggestions on the email that I have to send out?

Great advice here again I just checked my number of students and it says 8. So thats great. I won't be too nervous ha! Also since this is a weekend class I'm told that it is mostly adults returning to school. I wonder how that is going to be. I have started preparing. Do you guys generally prepare for the whole course in advance? This is my first time, so I'm having tons of questions.

That's a ton of awesome advice wv, thanks so much! This class is actually pretty small about 8 students but the bad news is it involves a 2 hour train ride for me blah! I'm wondering how to prepare "enough" vs "not enough". That's a hard one for me!

I landed a teaching position for one course under grad level and the class starts in 4 weeks from now. I'm not even sure how to start my prep. I have my text and my syllabus with the class meeting dates. What are my first steps? I'm thinking that I would make myself familiar with the first month's material and also have a couple of assignments on hand. Any tips? This is my first teaching position ever and I'm a little nervous.

Thanks so much guys. I feel that I have company now on my situation. Lol He is definitely lonely. I wonder why he won't spend time with family. He has two sons and his wife of course. Unfortunately I committed to one visit which is later this week and now I'm thinking to skip it. As pointed out by someone, he seems to derive his pleasure by making me help with his organization/office. Weird but selfish of him. Did he think that I am the kind that would also be exited about this ? I don't know what he is thinking. Anyway looks like he is going to get a publication through me which is why he sugarcoats his words I'm assuming. Ofcourse I feeel a lot more sane now after reading your responses here

Sigaba I have graduated and don't really have anything at stake except my recommendations and my professional relationship. I'm so mad at myself and this whole situation.

I graduated from my master's program last month still awaiting degree award). My advisor did a decent job supporting me during my thesis, ups and downs were obviously there. Now, that I have graduated he suggests publishing my thesis (not a bad idea). However, I have met him twice so far and his behavior is totally inappropriate, so are his emails. He calls me over to his office and talks about everything else. He even had me organize his cabinet once. then, the second time we met at starbucks and he says "he likes me and enjoys spending time". I was pissed and needless to say never contacted him again. Although secretly , I wish i can publish my thesis. Then, he sends an email saying " you can come to my office sometime next week. We can organize some old folders and then go on a long drive". Ofcourse we hardly talk about publications but the reason partly is I am not prepared. He wants a summary of my thesis which I have not done yet. Seriously, what is he thinking here? I would want to hook up with a 60 year old man, despite being happily married. I am wondering if I should just be to the point and tell him that he is crossing lines but I risk future recommendations and possibly a publication for my thesis. I am feeling degraded by his behavior and now wonder if I gave him this oppurtunity to think about me this way? I'm venting here as well as looking for some suggestions.

Thanks guys...I'm still debating if I should just ask the chair who did my interview or ask the HR/Personnel department. Also, they have not contacted me for any paperwork yet. How soon/late do they do this? or should I take initiative and ask. hiroshiman -- makes sense...i did not know how it works in academia... danielewrites -- fantastic idea! they would probably also know the relations between enrolment and pay, if any relation.

Do you think I should just ask how much they pay? I will take a look at the website. This is a first time prep for me, but I'm excited that this is a great oppurtunity.

Interesting, we have the same dilemma I wish you the best. I haven't aasked them the salary yet, hopefully, it is more than $20 per hour!!

I plan to apply to CS as well as MIS/CIS. MIS/CIS usually falls under Business school, so the GMAT

I had the same dilemma. I contacted past supervisors (from old jobs) and surprisingly all of them agreed to write. I would email/call/meet and tell that you are applying to 10 different schools and say you also need 10 letters. Give plenty of time. Offer help. I told them " I can come sit with you as you take notes". This made the process so much faster!

I am arguing with myself whether do it or not. I'm curious to listen to what you all have to say. I feel I am a good candidate overall ( undergrad GPA, master's GPA, publications during my master's program, master's thesis research, might be publishing my thesis) but I SUCK at standardized tests I may most likely need the GMAT for my program, some accept the GRE too. I feel these tests may be the single most factor to screw up my application. My reasons for going are (in order of preference) -industry-level research positions -full-time teaching at universities -academia research/publications May I hear all your thoughts as well? P.S.: Does work experience help? I am in a STEM field and the industry has much more jobs and much more growth than academia but I still feel attracted!!! I have about 5 years work -ex, including 6 months of a full-time internship.

I agree with juilletmercredi. I did not mention anything about gaps, I had 2 years gap while I applied to graduate programs ( in 2010) because of marriage and then we both moving to a new country. Life happens. Infact, I did not even have trouble finding jobs because of the gap. All you need to show is that you are a fit to the program and if it is a job then you need to show some relevant skills Good Luck

Thanks guys. I had posted this about 2 months ago, needed a reply within 2 weeks of that time. I ended up telling the truth. I was told that the position was probably going to be put on hold ( for whatever reason). I informed them that I am willing to do interviews with them for adjunct positions. Also, a few days back I attended an interview at a small college and got through the interview. Unfortunately, the job is 60 miles away. The travel sounds scary to me. I didn't know teaching positions are so hard to come by, especially in my field ( computer science).

I am a recent master's graduate in computer science. I work steadily in a full-time job. I had been thinking of teaching jobs for a few months. Then, I applied to various places and I finally landed a position last week. This is an adjunct position teaching just once class.The class meets every other week. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask the pay during the interview. Now, the real problem is this is a college that is 60 miles away from me. 60 miles does not sound bad but I live in NYC and travelling 5 miles here is a pain. I don't have a car either. This position is out on long island. I'm confused what to do. I haven't verbally or officially accepted anything yet but I would love to teach at a college and this is my chance. But the distance scares me. Any thoughts? How far would you guys commute for your job?

I attended the interview ,went ok. I think I will get the job. they never asked for any presentation. But asked some hypothetical questions like " what will you do if a student hands in a homework late"

TakeruK, thanks! I believe there is a small risk involved when we are in the practical training phase (OPT). MY I-20 is valid nd ofcourse I am in legal status here in the US. OFciurse, when I leave the country, I would have to apply for a visa to re-enter. For my country it is usually pretty quick unless there is some problem like background check etc which takes an extra 2-3 weeks. I plan to vist for 2 weeks. The visa, if all goes well, takes 1-2 days for the interview and 2-3 days for the passport to arrive.

I completed my program two weeks ago and had applied for OPT. I received my card and I also started working. I haven't been home for 2.5 years now (feels very emotional) and plan to go in septemeber/october this year. The real trouble is I do not have a valid visa ( I am on a valid F-1 status), I read on some school websites that there is some risk involved if we travel in a situation such as mine. I'm just a little nervous and but I want to travel since I cannot hold back for another 1-2 years to avoid this whole situation! Any one renewed or applied for a F-1 visa while completing practical training?Anything that you want to say may be helpful to me

Administrative processing is usuaally "Background checks". Tehy run you through various federal/state databases and also the customs and borders database. It is usually to check if the applicant has any criminal history. This usally clears up in a week or two for most people. Definitely update us

I am an international student and my travel is also 24 hours door-to-door. Planning to go home this year. I just completed my program and started my OPT. I know that there could be issues since my visa has expired but hey I got to go

Anyone that is travelling during Practical Training? I do not have a valid visa right now and will be travelling to my home country in 2-3 months from now.. i'm currently doing my practical training. I understand the the sole reason to request a F-1 visa is for study and I am "technically" done with my study. I'm not sure what to expect. I asked my school and they said "it's not a problem with all documents such as EAD card".

OP here -- I'm starting to look out for teaching jobs, possibly at CC to see how teaching really feels. I have a dose of research already but wanted to know what teachign really involves. Most positions ask for a PhD but i'm going to try with my master's.
