londonite Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Hey Just emailed both the MAPH and MAPSS departments today about funding and seems that MAPSS offers 30% of students on the program funding. This seems to be considerably more than MAPH- the lady said out of 130 students accepted maybe 15ish would receive funding- big difference. Any thoughts? thanks
christakins Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Hi, I received a partially funded MAPH offer this year; it covered 50% of tuition and nothing else. I originally applied to the English PhD program, and I suppose they forwarded me along to MAPH when I was rejected. I ultimately declined the offer for a fully funded offer elsewhere, but the general consensus (at least from the Eng side) is that the majority of funding goes to the PhD candidates. If you do happen to receive funding, it's likely to only cover a portion of your tuition, i.e. no teaching stipend and you'd have to pay partial tuition and fees. Maybe a current student can weigh in on this subject?
Swagato Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 This is correct. Funding, if you are offered any, will likely apply solely to the tuition part. You're responsible for the rest of it plus living expenses plus fees. Be sure to make a reasoned judgment when deciding whether to pursue MAPH or not. It can certainly place you well for PhD work (as in the case of myself and several friends) and it can also place you well in "alt-academic" or just non-academic work. However, the investment is a big one, and ultimately you're the best person to decide.
