  1. Hi there I was just wondering what any of your thoughts are on applying to a PhD program a year after completing an MA. Do you think grades and letters of recommendation lose value over time? What have been your experiences? I don't think I can manage writing a thesis, TAing and applying schools at the same time so I was thinking of taking some time off to earn extra money and give dedicated time to the GRE and applications. Thanks
  2. V helpful thank you! Out of curiosity, what are you areas of interest?
  3. Thanks for the helpful comments!
  4. Hi I have been admitted to the MA in English Literature at UBC and have been told I have an RAship. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is expected of you as an RA, and what sort of funding/wage is involved? I never specified whether I wanted to TA or RA- is there a reason for being nominated for one or the other? Sorry for the ignorance- the website doesn't say much and I'm a UK student so not really come across these sorts of graduate employment before. Thanks
  5. I applied to the University of British Columbia (UBC) not expecting any sort of funding, but I have been offered a $9000 scholarship with the promise of more...so it's always worth applying places I think and then seeing if they offer funding. I've also seen people getting into McGill with some funding also. Toronto not so much it seems. Plus there's the strong likelihood of getting a TAship/RA ship at UBC at least.
  6. Hi I am a Uk student I will be starting the MA in English Literature in September. I was wondering if someone could tell me a bit more about Green College http://www.greencollege.ubc.ca/ to live in for my first year. I think it looks great, but any info/anecdotes would be very appreciated! The food plan isn't on the cheap side and I was wondering what living on campus would be like.
  7. Hi there does anyone know which english departments are best for 18th and 19th Romanticism?
  8. Hi Socanth! I'm also a UK student exploring graduate study in the US. I did a summer course in Berkeley in English lit last year which I absolutely loved and would give anything to go back but given how competitive it is im looking at applying for some lower ranked schools. Whereabouts are you studying, and did you do an MA before? thanks
  9. Hey Just emailed both the MAPH and MAPSS departments today about funding and seems that MAPSS offers 30% of students on the program funding. This seems to be considerably more than MAPH- the lady said out of 130 students accepted maybe 15ish would receive funding- big difference. Any thoughts? thanks
  10. Hi Could anyone tell me about this program? Current students or past students? I've notice Georgetown isn't very high for grad english in the rankings, but it seems like a good course from looking at the website. thank you!
  11. Hi there I am a UK student that is interested in doing a Masters in the areas of Literature and psychoanalysis. I have mostly been looking to apply to English Literature Masters, but thought maybe comparative literature would be more suited? Although I'm not really interested in taking language classes or studying literature in other languages. I have also been considering more interdisciplinary programs like that of Chicago's MAPH and other liberal arts/studies Masters. If anyone has any experience or advice that would be great!! Thank you
