CalSWEC Child Welfare Stipend

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I am beginning my MSW at CSU Long Beach this fall, and I recently (May 31st) interviewed for the CalSWEC child welfare stipend.  Has anyone who has interviewed heard back?  I knew going into it that it would be a bit of a wait, but I'm starting to get apprehensive.  Thanks!

Sorry for not answering but how was the interview? What kind of questions did they ask?

The interview was structured but fairly relaxed, run by one faculty member and one child welfare social worker from the county.  They read from a script, asking questions ranging from the general "What sparked your interest in social work?" to more specific scenario questions (i.e. giving you a background on a client, then describing a potentially stressful situation and asking you how you would deal with it).  During the scenario questions, it seemed as if they were trying to assess my ability to prioritize, keep calm under pressure and my breadth of knowledge on standard practices and procedures in the field.  Overall, I left feeling that I was underprepared, at least in the way of on-the-job knowledge.  The best I can do now is keep my fingers crossed!  Are you beginning your MSW at CSULB this year?  If so, which program?

No, I'm going to CSU Dominguez Hills under the "Children, Youth, Families" concentration. I have my interview in July for the CalSWEC and I feel I don't know anything about social work or situational conflict, plus i suck at interviews Lol. Well best of luck

I have a friend that goes to CSULB and was recently awarded with the IUC stipend program, and she is already undergoing the process with human resources. It took 3 weeks for CSULB to contact her in regards to becoming an recipient of the IUC prgram. Did they give you a specific time frame? Either way, they will let you know if you will receive the stipend or not, via email

For the IUC program you can apply for the first or second year, however, you will be competing against 1st and 2nd year interns for the spots available. I believe CALSWEC is more of a one time deal since the first year you will be placed in a private non-profit organization serving child welfare clients, and the second year you will either be placed with DCFS or public child welfare agency

A little late but I finally heard back from the CalSWEC stipend, I've been awarded the stipend at CSUN!! :D I also interviewed with a field placement and was offered a Research Specialist position. The placement is in Downtown LA, thankfully! Which means I will only be commuting to the 'valley' twice a week for school. Best of luck for everybody still waiting to hear back!!
