adverbially Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I don't need to fill out a FAFSA in order to receive stipends or money from a TA-ship...right? Only if I want to take out additional loans?
chi0 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 I believe that's correct... for what it's worth, I filled out a FAFSA in early March, and my expected contribution came out to be quite high (because I have a job and a salary right now), but I am still being offered some RA and fellowships regardless of the FAFSA results - and these offers started to come in before I had submitted the FAFSA.

I think that depends on the school. Some schools require the FAFSA from anyone getting money from the school in any form.
Joel418 Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Several of the schools I applied to required me to fill out a FAFSA to apply for TAships and fellowships (completely apart from loans).

Even sillier question: They let you know ahead of time if this is the case, right? I've already gotten acceptance offers that come with TA-ships attached, and there's been no mention of needing FAFSA stuff on file in order to receive the money. I'm clueless.
Reinventing Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 You'd think they'd let you know, but it takes less than an hour to fill out the FAFSA (all you need is your bank account balances, your income, and the amount of tax you are paying for the year). I think I got burned a bit this year for not filling it out, so I'd go ahead and do it if you're spending more than 30 mins worrying about it. Especially if you're still waiting to hear back from other schools that might require it.

It takes such a short time to fill out that you might as well fill it out just to be safe. It couldn't hurt.
adverbially Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 You're right; I should just stop being lazy. Thanks!
