nrobles8 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 For those still wondering, I was able to get in contact with one of the program directors this morning and there are some offers that might be rolling out late next week. Specifically, New Zealand and a couple of other unspecified areas.
ethalog Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I.E. any of the countries that still haven't gone out yet (which is all of them except for Japan and Australia?) are not coming out until late next week? Ugh.
nrobles8 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 (edited) Just to clarify: I only asked about New Zealand and Elena mentioned that a couple of others would also be announced late next week that she wasn't sure about. So, I assume some of the others might be announced this week, hopefully. We have 5 left: Singapore New Zealand Taiwan China Korea Please correct me if anyone has heard otherwise Edited February 18, 2014 by nrobles8 brassrat 1
areichar Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I know this is premature but does anyone have advice on daily travel/getting-around in Australia, specifically the Sydney area? The dilemma at hand is that I will be at ANSTO, a lab about a 30-40 minute drive south-west of downtown Sydney. There is a 40 minute train + 20 minute bus combo that runs between the city and the lab, but the bus stops running at 6pm. Because the instrument I will be using is in high demand I anticipate having to work nights and odd hours often, I will need an affordable way of getting to the lab at any hour, regardless of where between the lab and sydney I'll be living. Does anyone have any experience doing long term car rentals out there? Do people usually get help from their hosts in this regard? I have noooo idea how this is going to work! Thanks in advance for any advice and good luck to anyone still waiting to hear back!
catface Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I'm not sure knowing when I'll know is better than knowing nothing at all. Good luck to everyone still waiting!
nrobles8 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I'm not sure knowing when I'll know is better than knowing nothing at all. Good luck to everyone still waiting! The feeling's mutual. I've been on edge for a couple of weeks now.
catface Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 The feeling's mutual. I've been on edge for a couple of weeks now. Ugh. Why did I tell people in my office about it? Whenever I've almost forgotten someone asks me about it. My less-than-nice reply is usually "when I know you'll know! Please. stop. asking."
nrobles8 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Haha yeah, I get the same thing from my advisor and the rest of my committee almost every other day. STOOOOOPPPPP
Eastern_wind Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 @areichar, For things like that you might want to discuss with your host. In many cases last year some went well out of their way to make sure you were all set up to do what you needed to do (i.e. secure transport, etc) but in other cases some hosts were completely hands off. So best bet is to just discuss this with your host once you're all set.
ihkim17 Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I just got a tentative offer for Korea..(anybody else going to Korea this summer??) Does anybody know whether there is still chance of not getting the final offer after receiving the 'tentative' offer..? Good luck to those who are still waiting to hear back!!
ideltoro Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 (edited) Bummer. Didnt hear back from EAPSI about Australia but I did manage to land an NSF PostDoc. So Its not so bad. Do you guys know if applicants get feedback about your proposal? Edited February 23, 2014 by ideltoro
guttata Posted February 23, 2014 Author Posted February 23, 2014 Bummer. Didnt hear back from EAPSI about Australia but I did manage to land an NSF PostDoc. So Its not so bad. Do you guys know if applicants get feedback about your proposal? Congrats on the postdoc - that's a bigger deal than EAPSI anyway! I emailed to ask about review sheets and yes, we will get them as we would for any NSF proposal. Seems to be quite the delay on them though, as they're sticking to that 6 month window they give themselves, so who knows when we'll get them.
Bainuo Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Has anyone heard back from China yet? I am anxiously waiting. Hopefully this week?

The tentative offer happens as soon as NSF comes to approve your proposal. Finalizations on these offers don't happen until about a couple of weeks before you leave to take on your fellowship. It's somewhere in the webinar.
nrobles8 Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Has anyone heard back from China yet? I am anxiously waiting. Hopefully this week? From what I've seen, china has not yet been announced. It's one of the few that we are still waiting on that will hopefully be announced later this week.
Superego Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Has anyone heard back from China yet? I am anxiously waiting. Hopefully this week? I can confirm that notifications for China haven't gone out yet. Elena called me last week to discuss my proposal for China and she indicated that decisions would made this week.
catface Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I got an offer for an internship today that would be really great and force a hard decision, if I had to pick between both. Come on NSF, I want to know already! New Zealand and one chapter of my dissertation or company I would love to work for/real-world experience?
ethalog Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Anyone heard from Singapore? Why on earth would they release some of the decisions a month before others? Makes no sense!
pdelta Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I just received a tentative offer for New Zealand! Also, for folks waiting for any other countries, when I called Anne Emig this morning (before I got my offer) she said all countries should be out by the end of the month.
geogPhD Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 Does anybody know if official rejections are going out now, too? Or do they wait a while to send those out, in which case you have to read between the lines if you haven't heard yet but know others have already found out?
eapsigrad Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I got a Taiwan offer earlier today... good luck to those still waiting
nrobles8 Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Also received my New Zealand offer! Extremely excited!!! Congrats to everyone!

Or do they wait a while to send those out, in which case you have to read between the lines if you haven't heard yet but know others have already found out? Rejection notices won't go out until official notification goes on Fastlane, which is likely to be weeks or even up to that 6 month deadline that Elena keeps repeating. Basically, if you see your country with announcements and haven't heard anything, no go.

I hope you're right that announcements for China will come out by end of this week. I'd like to know before the deadline for summer semester TA-ships on Monday. Edited February 25, 2014 by brassrat
