amillion Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Hi everyone, In a previous thread I mentioned that I was considering applying for US PhDs in Statistics. I majored in economics but have an extensive quantitative background combined with programming skills (R, Matlab, etc). I'm looking for a funded offer at a department which doesn't require the Math GRE (unfortunately no time to prepare for that). The problem is my GRE isn't very strong (158V 161Q)... I'm disappointed since the math involved is very basic and I couldn't even crack the 90th percentile for the quant section. Is there some kind of cut-off that would disqualify me? Thanks
cyberwulf Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 A 158V is just fine, and a 161Q isn't a big deal if you've done well in advanced math courses. A lower GRE Q is more of a problem for students without a lot of quantitative background.
ghost699 Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 In my opinion (as an applicant too), the lack of mathematics will hurt you more than the GRE, which is fine (but the quant is quite a bit lower than the averages I have seen published by some top schools).
