123hardasABC Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 When choosing the schools I wanted to apply to, I only considered two major factors: location and program. I actually never considered cost...until right now. I finally browsed the tuition and fees pages and did the math...and my god, an MPH can get pretty expensive. My question for you all is, how much money are you willing to pay for your MPH? A lot of the "big name" universities come with an added expense; do you think it's worth it?
MikKar Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 (edited) I am willing pay to a reasonable fee, not the premium costs that come from brand names. Edited November 2, 2013 by MikKar
katethekitcat Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 This is something I'm becoming increasingly worried about, especially as I read more and more about how even a lot of people with master's and PhD's, even in the sciences, are struggling to find jobs, pay off loans, etc. When I was all bright and starry eyed and deciding where to apply, I didn't even factor cost in. Now it's becoming a top-priority concern. And public health isn't necessarily a field that pays very well, and a lot of the jobs people want - with the CDC, etc - are government funding, and who can trust government funding these days? Does anyone follow Jonathan Eisen on Twitter? He's a biologist, not a public health person, but he posts a lot of stuff about the difficulty of finding a job these days. There was a CraigsList ad in New York a few weeks back looking for someone with a PhD and several years of post-doc experieince to work in a lab FOR FREE. And these aren't uncommon ads.
123hardasABC Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 Yeah. Another thing I forgot to realize is cost of living. The big schools are in major cities and that's gonna be an added cost. I've been so fixated on applying and getting in that I totally overlooked everything else. It's all a bit overwhelming.
