Redacting sensitive information in transcripts

The NSF required redacting personal information such as SSNs and even irrelevant information such as state test scores (not the GRE, or what they require)-- do schools usually need this or can you redact it out of the transcripts?

At least for the places I applied to, they told me to black out all but the last four numbers.  I suppose it could differ by location, though.  I'm guessing the SSN is not required, since my transcript does not even have my SSN on it, and they put it in my application folder just fine.
