"new media", "new genres", "digital"-art, "intermedia" MFA progrms, dumping ground for thoughts :?

hey gradcafe ppl :)

sorry in advance for the heavy useage of scare quotes in the thread title.

i'm in the final stretch of applying to MFA prgms in the above -mentioned hazy field that drifts between video, new media, post-photography, conceptual  and internet0aware work. My own work doesn't neatly fit into any of the boxes-- i work in photography but am interested now mostly in performative writing using the internet as medium and  video/screen-based work.. *which is confusing because i believe *all* work is migrating towards consideration of the screen as a given, even if you are a painter....

Basically i'm not nerdy enough for programming work, wearable computing, etc such as the tradition of programs of NYU's ITP program  or the DANM prgm@ UCSC --IMO-- but i'm interested in a program that has 3D printing facilities, for example, and a faculty that encourages digital practices. Very inter-disciplinary. I have been teaching in experimental pedagogy programs for ~2 years and would like a program that allows me to teach, I would ideally like to be in a major research university, and another filter on my search has been affordability, as i am poor and have no interest in becoming far more so in ~3 years, so no CalArts or SAIC.  Also, no want low-res programs, like Bard.

Here's my site: http://cargocollective.com/alexandradeleon

Here's my list, if this will be of any help to any one who finds themself in a similar situation, and please, let's talk, if you have other interesting thoughts to add on this.

Programs considerng all of the above:

UC San Diego (applied 12/4)

UC Santa Barbara Digital Media

UC Irvine **maybe---would like to hear more about this program

UCLA New Genres

U of Chicago

NYU Stiendhart

THANKS in advance for your thoughts.

xx

good to know pearspears :) hope that is helpful for others.

does anyone have any 411 on Carnegie Mellon's MFA? it *looks* good, the facilities seem good, Pittsburgh is vaguely liveable-seeming to me, don't recognize any of the faculty however. knowledge jewels?

re-asking for more info on UC Irvine, too....and adding that a friend made me a little nervous by telling me that the studio environment is odd there....most grads, she said, are rarely in Irvine (in LA, instead)....seems like it lacks in community, but hey, it's hear-say, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Hi Mirror_logic,

I might add to your list Penn Design MFA. I currently attend and from what you mention in your desires/concerns you might be really satisfied here. You seek a Very Interdisciplinary program, major research university and opportunity to teach. This is your place. The program is rigorous and the professors are incredible smart and talented. 3 of them are in the Whitney Biennial this coming year. I have also come from a photography background so my desires were the same. Get in touch if you are curious and I can elaborate on certain interests. Good luck with the applications!

Hey T,

Thanks for the tip! U Penn's program wasn't even on my radar.....Hennessy Youngman was there?? That's interesting, and so is the faculty/visiting artist list. How's funding over there? (if you'd rather PM your reply, please do).... Have to keep an eye on the $ in all of this, always, unfortunately.

One of my recommendation suggested the Dramatic Media program at University of Georgia. I'm already applying to 9 but I may apply once I am able to get in touch with them about the due date.

So sorry, this may be too late, but the RCA in London has an MA Research degree that you could apply to through Photography, where you could specialise in moving image and performance. The research degrees are often funded.

You would maybe really like CMU. I went there for undergrad and the grad program is rigorously concept-drive, with support for a wide range of mediums. Also their studio for creative inquiry has a lot of support / collaboration opportunities for code-based work which seems relevant. Golan Levin who heads it is really well known within the new media community. Honestly, look at the work done by recent grads as well as the faculty.

hey Benjamin, i just saw this, thanks for adding UIUC to this, i do indeed admire stephen cartwright's work ( and an ex-chicagoan here ;-)

SaintClaire, CMU is such a good addition to this list, after 6 yrs in the midwest,I wanted to go West-west or east-east, personally, though I've heard Pittsburgh is unique/magical/interesting and CMU is a great (albeit tiny) program.....,,,,, aS for me, my journey's come to an end, I'm headed off to UCSD <3

but

Let's keep this thread going, for posterity's sake, and 2015 MFA aspirants.

Heres a Rhizome thread, pretty dated but still relevant IMO.....

I will + to this list,

U Wisconsin-Madison's Art+Tech program, as well.....
