SOP review for fall 2014 MS mech

Recommended Posts

I aspire to lead innovative endeavor for the society with my intention to accomplish a research work in mechanical engineering. The excitement at doing creative work in my present organization for a new product launch has motivated me to pursue further research in automotive domain. My aspiration to become maven in this field has driven me to pursue an extraordinary graduate program from a reputed institution.

At Purdue University I intend to study Systems, Measurement and Control as major in mechanical engineering. I look forward to develop skills and contribute in optimizing vehicle systems and diagnostics & control strategies. It is best place for research, having facilities such as Ray W. Herrick Laboratories and Engine Controls Laboratory.

I am fascinated to Dr. Gregory M. Shaver expertise in power trains modeling control, research in the hybrid technologies by incorporation of IC engines on hybrid power trains. If given I am given an opportunity these will be complementing my expertise as automotive engineer.
I am also interested in Prof. Peter H. Meckl research in detection and diagnostics of diesel engines for emissions control; control of engine after treatment devices for regeneration and Automatic tuning of engine's controller parameters for optimising its performance.

In Purdue, current projects on Diesel engine diagnostics and prognostics and Vehicle health management are perfectly inline with my research intent.

Coming from a Military family, I have been brought up with an added sense of discipline and upfront enthusiasm for my ambitions. My career in engineering, in fact, is rooted to my mother’s encouragement which transformed me to an excellent student during my formative years. Then onwards, high grades from a competitive exam took me to National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna, which is conferred “An Institute of National Importance” by The Government of India.

As a Mechanical engineering student, I acquired core knowledge in IC Engine, Dynamic of Machinery and Heat & Mass Transfer. My belief in practical application of theory, focused on courses such as Finite Element Analysis, Numerical Methods and Computational Techniques. My thesis was 'Diesel Technology' wherein I demonstrated a sustainable options of diesel engines. My work involved a case study of current TDI engines, and analysis of technologies responsible for offering cleaner driving, which instilled in me the passion for research in sustainable engine technologies.

I accomplished an industrial project on Steam Turbine Technology while at training in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, an equipment manufacturer. That gave a valuable insight into relationship between manufacturing processes, and, functionality of industrial equipment thereof.

Currently, I am associated with Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd in the capacity of Assistant Manager in Automotive Product Development wing. I look after electric vehicle project and responsible to handle the integration of major aggregates in vehicle architecture. My role also includes - system design, vehicle layout assessment and packaging, which demands creativity and innovation. My work allows me to appreciate the importance of research and the amount of effort required to transform ideas become reality.

I have also implemented a Design for Six Sigma(DFSS) project on HV Battery box design and worked to optimize the Electric Vehicle's Charging port layout and RegenerativeBraking Pedal design. Working with leading sustainable mobility players in automotive industry encourages me to look for electric drive strategies and solutions.

My work has been awarded an 'outstanding effort certification' for value engineering implementation in vehicle platform. After working in Automotive Industry with a quality exposure to vehicle projects for a good amount of time, I am convinced and dedicated towards a career in research and development in automotive field.

My ambition is to make an effective contribution to automotive industry, and eventually benefit the society. This requires having perfection in research intent through an intellectual development based education. I believe Purdue University will surely help me to enrich knowledge and enhance expertise for research in this field, that will help bring me closer to my goals– along with these core purpose that I bring to the table.

Statement of purpose

An abundance of technological innovation achieved so far and the possibilities ahead intrigues me from a young age, and urge me to contribute my part. The creativity and excitement involved while working for new vehicle launches, motivates me to pursue further research in the automotive feild. My aspiration to become an expert in this field has driven me to pursue an extraordinary graduate program in mechanical engineering.

At Purdue University I intend to study Systems, Measurement and Control as concentration in mechanical engineering. I look forward to developing skills and contribute in optimizing vehicle systems and diagnostics & control strategies. Purdue having facilities such as Ray W. Herrick Laboratories and Engine Controls Laboratory is suitable for research in this field. Besides, current projects on Engine Diagnostics and Vehicle Health Management are perfectly inline with my research intent.

Also, I am fascinated by Dr. Gregory M. Shaver's expertise in power trains modeling control and his research in incorporation of IC engines in hybrid power trains. If I am given an opportunity, these will be complementing my expertise as automotive engineer.

Likewise, I am also interested in Prof. Peter H. Meckl's research in diesel engines diagnostics for emissions control, engine after treatment devices and automatic tuning of engine's controller parameters for optimising the performance. These research projects perfectly overlapp my research intent.

Coming from a Military family, I feel a sense of discipline and upfront enthusiasm for my ambitions. My engineering career can be traced back to my mother’s influence, which helped me become an excellent student during my formative years. Then onwards, clearing a competitive exam took me to National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna, which is conferred “An Institute of National Importance” in India.

There, as a Mechanical Engineering student, I acquired core knowledge in IC Engine, Dynamic of Machinery and Thermal Sciences to name a few.
