....and do you believe we'll probably have to wait until at least Monday to find out? I took the liberty of e-mailing a few people in the department to find out what the heck is going on. I figure (a) if I'm rejected, bothering people won't make a bit of difference at this point, and ( B) if I'm accepted, it's probably too late for them to un-accept me. I seriously doubt they would wait list me, probably just reject or accept, so that wasn't much of a worry. If *anybody* gets back to my e-mails tomorrow, I'll be sure to post.

You e-mailed them two days after initial acceptances were being sent out? That seems a bit premature.

Well, I figure if I were accepted, I would've heard something by now, like everybody else who was accepted. But I didn't hear anything. I'm just hoping if I was rejected, maybe I can hear through the grapevine instead of having to wait 2-3 weeks before they say anything. I'm not good at waiting and uncertainty.

Do you think a flattering love letter to Rice might help my chances? Before discovering philosophy, I aspired to be a poet. Maybe I can woo them into an acceptance. It worked on my wife...

Maybe something like:

Roses are red

Violets are blue

Funding is awesome

And so is funding

I'm glad I had an upvote left for that.

What does Arizona have to do with anything?

On the assumption that your question isn't a rhetorical one, see 1) dgswaim's post in response to the post of mine you're questioning; 2) my response to dgswaim's post (above) immediately after afterwards; and 3) the results in my signature.

I was stuck on the last page, didn't see your answer on this page. I get it now.

Logos I think it's funny your name is logos. You come off as a major pathos guy. I thought I was a big worrier....

I was 'accepted' to Cuny and wait-listed for a fellowship. Full funding usually involves both fellowship and assistantship, I'm guessing that those who have posted so far do not have full funding guaranteed yet. From the email I understood they are able to fully fund 10 students, so I'm guessing more people (those that did get fellowships) will be hearing from Cuny soon.

I also noticed that most or all of the Cuny posts are from international applicants. Maybe they are letting us know first and will be calling Americans soon. That's another hypothesis. Good luck everyone!

There's nothing wrong with getting in touch if you do it right, but two days after initial admissions? Emailing several people? How could you possibly think that that's the thing to do? It's not going to get you in anywhere, and if your emails sound impatient or impolite, you might just bump yourself down a few notches on the waitlist.

If I really felt the need to reach out, I would wait another week and email the director of admissions—and no one else.

Congrats on that and your other acceptances!

I'd like to believe that I didn't hear from CUNY because I'm going to get a full-funding acceptance, but that probably won't happen :P

Good catch on the international thing. International funding is harder to come by, and in some states it is much more expensive to take on an international student.  Of the 4 CUNY posts, 3 are international and one declined to answer. Perhaps CUNY has some fellowship money set aside for a couple international students, and they decided to answer those first.

Fingers crossed!

 Thanks I needed a laugh.

I'm convinced that I'm going to be at a professional conference someday, and some philosopher is going to make an off the cuff remark about dfindley, and at that moment we will know that we shared a slice of cyberspace together in the 2014 admissions cycle.

"Have you heard of dfindley?" will be our shibboleth.

Update on the CUNY acceptances that are wait-listed for fellowship, it is indeed the case that this is equivalent to being wait listed for funding.

Do you know if they sent all their acceptances out, or only those wait-listed for funding?

Makes it pretty clear that its an international applicant thing.

No clue, sorry! I just asked for clarification about what I received.

I sent good, restrained e-mails. I think they understand that it's a stressful time. I just asked them in a calm, measured tone if the acceptances had all gone out, since I had heard nothing.

CUNY acceptances/funding wait lists are NOT all international. A friend of mine was accepted via email yesterday and seems to have gotten the same message as all reported acceptances. Said friend is a US citizen from a US school.

Another friend of mine applied to cuny a few years back and was accepted -- if I remember correctly, they accept people and then sort out funding within the next week or so. I'm not sure that anyone gets a better package than anyone else. Funding just get a bit more...chaotic there since it's a public, rather than private, school.

Edited to add that additionally, from memory of earlier accepted friend's experience, CUNY doesn't send out all acceptances/wait lists at once in a neat little BCC'd email, or anything like it. If this year's process resembles past years', not yet having heard from CUNY does *not* mean you're out there.

Do they really? Wow I had no idea. That seems like a good practice.

I never thought about that, either. But I agree it's a good practice and it makes sense. I was the only woman in my MA program, and even though I was friends withs with everyone, there where a few moments where I thought I was on a different planet. Especially the day that people got bored and started arm-wrestling. THAT was just too much for me (and I was kinda a jock in high school and science geek in college...)

Accepted to Boston's Phd program! To say I'm happy is understatement. :) :) :)

Congrats! Any word on your waitlist from ND yet?
