I have heard good things from a few professors, but it does not seem to be well-known, and it does not appear on any biostat rankings. From the list of current PhD students on their website, it appears 15/16 are international. Not to sound ignorant, but this is slightly concerning to me as a domestic American applicant. Any information on the department would be helpful One issue with UF Biostat is that they recently lost their most high-profile faculty member (and chair), Mike Daniels. I guess it depends on what your other options are...
Stat Assistant Professor Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Got an acceptance from UC Irvine, will need to wait a bit longer for info on possible funding. Still waiting on Columbia and UCLA, but odds are if I was going to get accepted there, I would've been accepted to one of my other 'reach' schools as well, so pretty much just waiting for the rejection letter. I guess my main decision now is whether I want to stay in California or move to New York. Re: UCLA. Not necessarily. If you log onto the decision status page and see "undecided," it means you haven't been rejected yet. And I know UCLA has been known to send out acceptances as late as April. It might be possible to contact them to see where your application stands.

There are some rejections from UCLA on the results page, but I did not receive a rejection yet. My e-mail inquiry to the vice chair informed me that they are still undecided, which could mean informal waitlist or that they're deciding whether to waitlist or reject me. clurp Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Just UNC so far. I haven't heard from Columbia, and I take that to be a bad sign. I expect to choose Duke over UNC because the focus on Bayesian statistics and computing is a better fit for me. Got rejected from too many places to list. I definitely think that different departments have different criteria when making decisions.

Yeah, but my reasoning is that if my application was competitive enough to get admission at a school of UCLA's caliber, I would've been at least waitlisted at some other 'reach' school. In retrospect, I vastly overestimated my admissions chances, and frankly am incredibly lucky to have received as much funding as I did from the places that did admit me.

If you haven't heard back by early April, I'd e-mail them again. Since the UCLA application instructions specifically asked applicants to list a faculty member they'd like as their adviser, I wonder if contacting professors in this case to reiterate interest would be of any help... I know it typically doesn't matter in stats, but since UCLA had asked us to do this, it might help? Not sure.

I was waitlisted but only found out after I emailed the graduate vice chair asking for an update. It's not unreasonable at this point to ask, and to ask again at the end of March/beginning of April if you don't get a final decision by then.

(I applied late for the PhD since I didn't know there was one until much later). There wasn't an interview, and there is an "accepted students" visit on the 21st. I don't know what that might mean for your application.

Maybe I am in the waiting list now.= = I think I should send an email and ask again. Although the chance is tiny.

I would've thought most people would know about their PhD program because of its strength in Bayesian statistics, but not about their master's, which is relatively new.

I'm not likely to receive this much support at UNC, Rice, or UCLA, and I'm not sure I prefer any of those *vastly* to Florida, so I'm weighing my options carefully.
