I didn't apply to Wharton I just saw on the results tab

In general, if they send an e-mail asking you to check website, you can be pretty sure it's a rejection. (That's what Duke did)

Haven't hear back from duke yet. Did they send out all the result already?

They sent out an initial round of rejections awhile back. So I think you have made it through the first wave that is a good sign. Also, it seems you are foreign? Since I am domestic, maybe they do the two pools differently. All speculation though.

I see. Thanks :)

There are "obvious admits" at every level of school, even top-tier places; as evidence, if you surveyed junior faculty at top programs, you would likely find that most "ran the table" (or came close) when they applied.

Also, it is possible to draw distinctions between even excellent applicants, although you could make the argument that such distinctions are of little practical significance. In your hypothetical example, there are several dimensions on which those two applicants could be compared: individual course grades, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, previous research experience, etc. It's unlikely that they will be identical in all respects.

What would a profile of an "obvious admit" at a place like Stanford look like?

statisticsfall2014, are you sure about this? I looked at past admissions results, and it appears people were sent e-mails to check a website, and some were acceptances (e.g. Berkeley and Chicago). Maybe it's different now though?

Also, Wisconsin accepting Doctoral students without funding? I wonder how many PhD applicants would actually go for this, unless they are independently wealthy...

I've been accepted there with funding. Granted, I did apply for the biostatistics option, but it's through the statistics PhD program. Maybe that's the difference?

Stat Applicant: No, I actually have no idea. i was just speculating lol. But yeah, that is weird, I thought all PHD's got funding..

In statistics i thought this was usually the case. Although in other fields such as economics many of the top programs such as Upenn and CHicago routinely admit people without funding. On another note i really am starting to wonder what Wharton is upto.

To the Berkeley admit.. was your email personalized or generic? I contacted Berkeley yesterday and they informed me they'd be sending out acceptances next week.

For anybody that got into UT Austin's stats program:

Was it a personalized email?

Are you likely to go?

It's high on my list but I haven't heard back yet.

statisticsfall2014,

Wow, thanks for the heads up! That would be totally awesome. :) I am personally interested in doing computational stats, so he would be a great adviser to have. I do think your adviser is what matters the most of all in your job search (academic or non-academic) as you near completion of the PhD.

To anyone who may be curious, the e-mail I received from Rice U. was very personalized and I had a nice e-mail exchange with the prof. We will skype later this week.

My email seems not personalized. It was an email asking me to check the website. I got the campus visit invitation yesterday and the email was also generic.

I may not go there since it is a long distance from my current location and I have very tight schedule in late Feb...

Stat Applicant: I just noticed that Hadley Wickman is a professor at Rice!! If you end up there, you should try and have him as your advisor. He is the King of R studio lol

He left Rice last year!

You are right, DoDream, but I see he is still listed as adjunct faculty on the Rice statistics webpage and on his LinkedIn profile. So he would still be a good contact to have, even if I can't have him as an adviser.

I'm not sure if having Hadley Wickham as your advisor is THAT great.

I mean the work he does is very narrow and more regarding statistical graphics. Seems like that would be a tough field to get hired in/get tenured for academia.

Of course he is amazing, but as an aspiring graduate student not sure if that would be the best way to enter academia.

Congrats to the Berkeley admit!

This is the first program I've applied to that has sent out any acceptances/rejections, and since I haven't heard back, I'm probably not accepted. I guess that's OK since it's a very competitive institution and coming from a non-Ivy-League-type institution makes it a long shot for me no matter what.

I also applied for Rice. Do you have idea about how many students they are going to interview? heard nothing from Rice yet
