Sunshine5535 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Hi Guys, Just curious about the admissions process and wanting more info about Northwestern's speech program. I applied and it looks amazing. I know it is competitive as well. Anyone have anything to add? Thanks
SashaB Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Just be aware it is EXTREMELY expensive. I don't have much to add beyond that, though I've heard its a good program.
lisa19 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I find it strange that they are ranked so high, yet according to EdFind (updated 12/13/13) they accept 184 out of 389 applicants. That's 47%! The only explanation I can think of is that it's so expensive - perhaps many people turn down the offer so they have to accept more people. I would have applied if it wasn't so far away for me.

I think the expense is exactly the reason they accept so many people. It's hard to stomach that amount for tuition if you can go somewhere else for much less $$$.
Sunshine5535 Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 I'm guessing they don't give any funding either? All of these expensive schools never do. Trying to go after our dreams and yet they make it so hard!
karita Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I think students can get up to $30,000 in scholarships, but even with that much money, it can still be costly to go there.
Sunshine5535 Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 Anyone know how we will be hearing about admissions decisions this year? Looks like its Northwestern's first year using the CSDCAS so I'm curious as to how they will notify us since they used to do it through their own website. Any ideas??
sayjo Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 (edited) I'm assuming they'll notify via email - that's what all my other CSDCAS schools have done (Purdue also called me). I read somewhere that they're planning to send out notices mid March, so hopefully we'll hear something in the next week. Edited March 13, 2014 by sayjo
Nala Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I don't know if I'm being completely unrealistic but I hope today is the day!!!!!
nik24 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I just saw from the results board that someone received an acceptance email!! The person posted that he/she is in their undergrad and that results should be coming out tomorrow (14th)! So excited and nervous!!!!! Good luck to all!!
Sunshine5535 Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 Did anyone hear anything yet?! I haven't seen any posts or recirved any emails - driving me nuts!
sayjo Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 No, but it's early in the day still. I'm pretty sure I've received all of my acceptances around or after 12:00 P.M. CST.
sayjo Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Check your email inboxes! I just got an email from Northwestern - I'm admitted.
MaxSLP Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 For those on the wait list, I'm Admitted but will be declining. Congrats sayjo! Is this your top choice? You have some great options. sayjo 1

Thank you!! I really like Northwestern, but probably won't attend unless I get funding. It's so expensive!! They said in the email that I was on the wait list for a scholarship. SLPamy Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I was accepted and I am also on the wait list for a scholarship. It's honestly just too much money for me to justify going without a scholarship, so I will likely be declining.
Nala Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Does anyone have any idea exactly how much the total tuition is? The finaid website says $5,152/course (each quarter) for the MS SLP program, but I can't find how many courses we'd have to take.
sayjo Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 If you go here, there is a link to a sample quarterly plan. Northwestern is weird in that it doesn't have normal credit hours for courses. So most courses are just counted as one unit. Some classes are .5 of a unit. It looks like the first year, you're taking about 4 units worth of work each quarter. If what you're saying about tuition is correct, ye gods it's expensive!! I know I've crunched the numbers before, but their tuition never ceases to amaze me. I can't believe they are able to fill a whole class each year with the cost.
GandalfTheGrey Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 If you google "northwestern university graduate tuition" you'll get to this page: http://www.northwestern.edu/sfs/tuition/t_grad_s_tuition.html Full-time tuition for the 2013-2014 school year is $15,040/quarter. FYI, that sample quarterly plan is from 2009, so I'm not sure I'd trust it. sayjo 1

I've emailed them asking for a firm number and I'll let you guys know.
Nala Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 The total cost would be ~ 120k, not including general tuition increases of about 3-4% per year and living expenses... aaaaand Northwestern is officially out of the running for me. Good luck choosing everyone! caterpillar and sayjo 2
