Should I mention a published non-refereed journal article which is not in my field?

Hi, everyone! First time poster, long time lurker here.

I'm applying to a couple of PhD programs in history and was wondering if I should mention an article which is not tied to my area(s) of interest? It's not connected to either of my previous theses or my current research interests, and I only used secondary literature (so it's sort of like a term paper), but it is my only published work to date (they explicitly asked not to list work in progress).

What say you?

Sure, if you're proud of it, why not? I don't know if it will help, but I don't think that it will harm your application. At worst, the committee will think it's not important and ignore that listing.

Thanks for replying! Yeah, you have a point. I was just afraid of looking desperate by listing it...
