Applied to Berkeley's Ethnic Studies PhD program and I'm unbelievably nervous! No GRE requirement, which means that anything goes.

Anyone else applying to this program or another Ethnic Studies department? Come and huddle with us!

I applied to Berkeley and UC Riverside for Ethnic Studies! :)

Right on!

Did you find it relieving or dreadful that no GREs were required for Berkeley? I had really mixed feelings about it because on one hand, my GREs are nasty, but on the other hand, I had to do far more work with both Statements and connecting with profs there.

I actually found it really relieving because my GRE scores weren't spectacular.  Although I definitely did need to spend more time on my SOP, I think it's a lot better reflection of who I am/the work I'm interested in producing rather than my test scores.  I'm expecting we'll start to hear back in the next couple weeks… how are you feeling??

I've been anxious everyday! My POI there hasn't been responding which might only mean that they are neck deep in selection time. (Or they're busy of course.) What's your field of interest? I'm coming from a humanities background so I hope to look forward to learning social science methods!

I'm coming from an interdisciplinary field and know a couple people in the Berkeley program so I've heard a little about it.  I see you're also applying to English and American studies programs??  I applied to some American studies programs as well and I think that or Ethnic studies would be a good fit for me.  Have you heard back from anywhere else yet?

No, not at all. I know that the first round of UCLA and Berkeley acceptances come in the first week of February, based on the results page. Everything else comes later in the month, so I've got quite the wait!

That's not me on the results search, but I also received an acceptance email from Berkeley! Nominated for a university wide fellowship, sounds like guaranteed funding for at least five years. Guys I'm freaking out!

Anyone have an idea if Berkeley does one-shot acceptances or waves?

Congrats!!  Were you accepted for Ethnic Studies?

Posted

Yes, the acceptance was for ethnic studies! And tingdeh, I think they do acceptances in waves.

Thank you -- and congrats! Might I ask what your area of interest is?

Posted (edited)

Sure thing. I'm an Asian Americanist with interests at the nexus of gender, religious studies and transnationalism. Methodologically, I'm interested in ethnography and critical theory.

Also, to clarify about the "waves" -- according to a friend in the program, they've likely sent out all their initial acceptances, but other acceptances might trickle in depending on how many people decline.

Edit to say -- just heard back from my friend, and he told me that he thinks that acceptance is unlikely if you didn't hear back. However, keep in mind that this is hearsay... it's hard to say for sure. Regardless, best of luck to everyone who's still waiting.

The acceptance at UCB makes me kinda happy I didn't apply! I'd be super nervous. But I did apply to UC-Riverside for Ethnic Studies. I was super duper impressed with the faculty and I feel like there I could somehow weave in my interests in performance/art studies with research on statecraft, state violence and the prison-industrial complex. But that's assuming I get in...which we all know what they say about assuming...

Positive thoughts, mxaveryeverhart!!  I also applied to Riverside Ethnic Studies ^^, they do have some amazing faculty I would love to work with.  I haven't heard anything yet though.  Also, just curious… do you keep receiving emails to 'finish your application'??  I thought I sent everything in but I keep getting emails implying it's not complete.  I don't know if it's automated or not and when I emailed them, I didn't get a response.

omgee yes! i got like at least 5 or 6 email notifications to finish my application after i'd submitted it and paid for it...I also had e-mailed the folks in the department about my application because I'm going through a name change and didn't get a response from them until like...three weeks ago. Same with the graduate division e-mail. Idk what that was about. But yes positive thoughts! positive thoughts! it'll be great :)

Phew that's a relief!  Hmm well maybe if it's taking them so long, they're just really backed up on work and slow to respond?
