jbell6 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I just received a great offer from an MBA program, but they are asking for a decision and deposit before other programs will release their decisions. Is it acceptable to ask for an extension on the decision deadline? Or should I try and ask the other schools to give me a decision early? I feel that since they have publicized decision release dates instead of rolling admissions, they won't be flexible, but it might influence their scholarship/aid offers. Thanks!

A friend of mine was in a similar situation. He was accepted to USC but waitlisted at UCLA and USC's decision was due with deposit. He went ahead and accepted and paid the deposit, but UCLA finally called back with an offer and he accepted immediately, walking away from the USC deposit. In the long run, it was well worth it to him, though. Good luck!
SiSi26 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) In response to bmarcus, I have been told that is one of the worst things you can do - accept and then back away last minute. Faculty have mentioned that its worth taking as much time as possible and delaying the acceptance to see the other opportunities available. Accepting an offer and then backing out tends to really mess up professors funding and plans. You are possibly hurting another student's funding chances and the partnership / contacts you have at the school. If they are not offering you any money…than I would probably just accept it, pay the deposit and then sacrifice the deposit if another offer comes along. After all, MBA programs tend to have so many students bringing in money... Edited February 6, 2014 by SiSi26
TakeruK Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Definitely normal and acceptable to ask for an extension! Also a very good idea in this case too.
