I'm applying to a PhD in French linguistics, and I was wondering what school had an overall better program and better reputation between UT - Austin and IU - Bloomington.  All thoughts and opinions are welcome!

Thanks!

I'm interested in phonetics and phonology, and it appears that IU really doesn't have any people that focus entirely on sound in French Ling.

I feel like Austin definitely has a bigger department. Also, UC Davis apparently offers a doctorate in French linguistics as well. I think they have a fairly small department compared to Austin or IU but there might be some phonological there if you want to check them out.

Dr. Russell at UC Davis focuses on phonetics/phonology (at least according to his website).

Both IU and UT have very good reputations.  And I believe they are both very large (relatively) programs.
