jmg06 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I'm applying to a PhD in French linguistics, and I was wondering what school had an overall better program and better reputation between UT - Austin and IU - Bloomington. All thoughts and opinions are welcome! Thanks!
Les-Souliers-Rouges Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 From my professors in college, UT- Austin has a better reputation but I am not entirely sure myself. I believe that Austin offers better funding than IU though.
jmg06 Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 I'm interested in phonetics and phonology, and it appears that IU really doesn't have any people that focus entirely on sound in French Ling.
Les-Souliers-Rouges Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I feel like Austin definitely has a bigger department. Also, UC Davis apparently offers a doctorate in French linguistics as well. I think they have a fairly small department compared to Austin or IU but there might be some phonological there if you want to check them out.
mattskiba Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Dr. Russell at UC Davis focuses on phonetics/phonology (at least according to his website). Both IU and UT have very good reputations. And I believe they are both very large (relatively) programs.
