black7ack Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 It is almost certain that I will be attending Columbia University this fall, Computer Science PhD. I would love to hear from other people attending Columbia University.
Minghao Cheng Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 It is also of high probability that I will choose Columbia for my graduate study, Physics PhD.
AcademicX Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 (edited) I will also probably be attending Columbia next fall. What do people think about Columbia housing? It seems the easy way out of the stress of apartment hunting in NYC. EDIT: Philosophy PhD! Edited March 9, 2014 by Johannes14 AcademicX 1
newton Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 After some deliberation, decided to take up Columbia. Phd, Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies (MESAAS).
Minghao Cheng Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Hey guys I‘d like to know whether there is someone knowing about the housing at Columbia. I've heard about that the Arbor residential area in Riverdale, Bronx provides better amenity while its distance to the campus is much larger. And it seems that living in Bronx is not as secure as in Manhattan. So I wish to know some specific information about the Arbor, especially the security condition. Thanks!

ARSHIA CHAUDHRI Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Attending the masters in urban design program at GSAPP, Columbia universities! Anyone similar around?!
sta Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) I will be attending Columbia( MS in EE) this fall unless I get into UT Austin. Edited March 28, 2014 by sta
supriya84 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I got an admit for MS-CS at Columbia. Does anyone have any info about internship opportunities during summer and TA/RAships for grad students (not PhD)?
sorairo Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Biomedical engineering, MS/PhD track! Pretty excited for New York too.
SpongeLynn Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I just accepted the offer for MSOR. Anyone else?
supriya84 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 i20 aside, can anyone give an actual picture of the cost of attendance (tuition + living expenses) for MS in Comp Sc at Columbia University? This is what I gather so far:Tuition is $1640 x no. of credits = $55,000Living expenses approx $2500 x 18 months = $45,000TOTAL = $110,000How much can a student make as TA/RA or with part time jobs during the course? Also, how much does one get paid during the internship? Finally, when the program is done, what is the average starting salary for an MS-CS grad from Columbia? Matthew3957 1
InJadeWeBelieve Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Decide to accept MS nutrition in Teachers College and plan to finish MS along with DPD+DI in 3 years. Anyone similar? Wanna make new friends and team up!
lucky21 Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Hello everyone! I'll be attending the J-School. I'm moving from England, any other international students out there? Does anyone know about the quality of Columbia's housing?

Does anyone know about the quality of Columbia's housing? No idea about the housing (it's been suspiciously difficult to find info online) but I'll be moving from England to the J-School too (as long as I can find £50k any way)
cogstudies Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Hello everyone! I'll be attending the J-School. I'm moving from England, any other international students out there? Does anyone know about the quality of Columbia's housing? I had a friend who did Columbia housing and said it was rather small, but then again she purposely chose a smaller room because it cost less. Otherwise, she had no complaints. If you need to find non-Columbia housing, I have a good friend who does real estate in NYC- he's actually finding me a place when I move this summer. You can PM me for his info.
Vikas Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 @Supriya84: Columbia is one of the best schools for CS out there, and there are tons of opportunities (the location helping the cause as well!)... especially, if you are interested in AI (machine learning, NLP etc.)! congrats on a great admit.... xbar 1

I am trying to figure out a similar thing. However, my masters is not even terminal. Mine would be in Modern European Studies and I would want to go on and pursue a Ph.D. afterward and I am wondering if it is worthwhile or if I should just wait it out and apply somewhere next year. For me the costs would be a little less but still probably close to 75k. I just dont know if its doable or worth it. Hope you get it figured out

Does anyone know about the quality of Columbia's housing? Canadian here, still trying to wrap my head around all the paperwork D: My department visit included a tour of some Columbia-owned apartments near campus -- I thought they seemed decent, mostly 2 bedrooms, nothing fancy, and pretty spacious? I hear the roommate matching system is not so good though, essentially just a "messiness level" thing. (I know that's a pretty vague description, feel free to message me if you have specific questions though!)

(I know that's a pretty vague description, feel free to message me if you have specific questions though!) Hi, I'll be doing my MA Biotech this coming Fall I just applied to Columbia's UAH (grad school dorm/apartment-share) housing. I'm curious about the "messiness"...you mind sharing? My knowledge tells me their housing is NOT spacious at all, unless it's a >$2000/month studio, but on-campus housing is very convenient.
swmbr Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 i lived in columbia housing for 2 years while doing my masters. I was placed in a very large unfurnished apartment with one other student who was in the same program as me. Our living room was HUGE (larger than anything i've seen in nyc), each had our own bedroom which fit a full size bed, dresser, desk and chair, and also had a closet. Lived 1 block away from school and paid around $600/month, which is probably impossible outside of Columbia housing. I was initially placed in a furnished apartment with 4 other roommates, however Columbia was nice enough to let me switch (probably because I checked off on the application wanting to live with people of the same gender and was placed in a mix). I think I preferred bringing my own furniture to the standard that I would have received (I'm assuming a twin extra long bed).

You probably know better than I do if you've already applied, but I was told by current grad students that they ask you to rate how tidy you are and essentially use that to match you to another student. I don't know if maybe our standards for spaciousness are different (I used to live in downtown Toronto), but for the apartments I saw, I might guess 500-600 square feet for two bedrooms + living room + kitchen + bathroom? Hope that helps! Edited May 9, 2014 by sorairo
deathberry Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Yes the rating of personal tidiness in the housing application got me confused. I thought the matching process would have been more...thoughtful? Well I was being really honest, I just couldn't say that I clean my room "everyday" Sorairo thanks for the info. I've never been to NYC so I really am not familiar with the living conditions/housing market. All I have is information gathered from friends and the internet. But I really don't want to go into the frustrating process of house-hunting...
