bsharpe269 Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) Do you have time to retake it still? You have an awesome application. I think that GRE score could possibily keep you out of otherwise successful applications. I am not suggesting that it defintely will, just that it possibility could. Also, retaking it can make a HUGE difference. I took it twice before my masters. The first time I was so nervous that I got straight 50% in everything (which makes no sense since I am a huge math person who should have blown that part away). I retook and was more relaxed about it and scored in 75-95% in everything. The tests were a month a part so it was purely a difference in stress level. Edited February 16, 2014 by bsharpe269
Hopeful678 Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) Hi, I would have to retake it for next season's applications at this point. I'm still waiting to hear back from 5 schools. I have 4 research projects I'm working on currently. I hope to get some published and I would like to present on at least one at a conference. I was wondering, do you know of any good preps, I'm better working 1 on 1, where I can ask questions when I'm stuck, and to just have a partner to go over flash cards with I feel would help a ton. I really think I could score high 160s in math, I just haven't done math outside of statistics in so long. Please let me know, Thanks Edited February 16, 2014 by Hopeful678
bsharpe269 Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Im using magoosh right now because I plan to retake the GRE before phd applications. I absolutely love it. There are videos that give tips, tons of practice questions, and there are practice tests. For each practice question (math or verbal) there is a video explanation that walks you through the problem if you need help. If you have any questions about any of the info then you can send an email from the site. I have not yet had to do this but I read reviews before buying it and people all said that they got responses within 24 hours and usually within a few hours. I got mine when it was onsale for $100 (I think it is still on sale for a few more days). I personally think it has totally been worth the money. Other people may have other programs that they recommend more. I havent tried others so I can only speak for this one.
awells27 Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 The 144Q is low, but since you have your apps in, the results will tell you whether you have to take them over again. If you get no solid admits, then you know its the GRE that likely held you back.
lavendar Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 OK I am ever so upset right now because I bombed my GRE. I have applied to mostly top schools except for Syracuse which is a teaching focused school, so I thought I had a better chance there. I have an MA and wrote phenomenal papers and SOP's. There is a lot more I have done, so I waited until the last minute to take this test. It is too embarrasing to say I got a 145 in v and I did not have to take the math portion because my major for a graduate Ph.D is Comparative lit. I called my daughter (Yes, I too am an older student) and she said mom cancel and re-apply next year. This was my first take on the GRE but all I got were these science passages even the sentence completion etc were science related. I do very well on those and was counting that as my strength, but even those I knew I blew. I already sent in my scores. Should I see if they can be cancelled or should I just wait it out and see what happens? I have been out of school for too long...so I am really upset. However, I am a college instructor for the last several years. Please some advice!!!!!! I feel like a total idiot!
