Hello,

I have been offered admissions to the two Ph.D programs: University of Washington/ Near and Middle Eastern Studies and Boston College/ History. Also I made a telephone interview and I think CUNY also will come with an admission offer.

What can you suggest me about them in terms of academic quality, cities, school's reputation after graduation etc?

I would like to hear any idea.

Boston College gives a 5 year funding and UW just gives for the first year. For other years, I will have to apply for scholarship-assistantship...

Briefly, I am really confused.

Thank you very much.

As far as cities, I currently live in Seattle, and have spent time in Boston and NY. If you like mountains and general access to greenery, Seattle is the superior choice. UW is also right in the city, as opposed to BC, which is really in a suburb on a far out limb of the green line (Boston public transit).

Other than that, the differences are primarily East Coast dynamism versus West Coast laid back ism. And weather. Seattle is substantially warmer in winter, milder in summer, than either Boston or NY.

Go with the money! So I would say Boston.

But if not, CUNY in general is pretty cheap tuition wise. However, the cost of living is high in NYC. Depending on what borough your main building is in, you can get a cheaper apt in Queens/Brooklyn and commute everyday. But if you like fast pace action and lots of things to do all the time and a diverse population - it will all be worth it.

Thank you very much for your answer DeciBELLE!

Actually I cannot pay even one dollar for Ph.D. so the money sounds great.

However, I have some concerns on BC's academic qualification. Maybe they are great but I have no much information about them and trying to understand their position in the academic world. Now just still waiting for CUNY. If they reject me, at least I will have only two choices :)
