John.Galt Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 My intended area of research in grad school is interdisciplinary. The school which I plan to join has many compulsory courses , but all of them are very easy. I was wondering will the department allow me to take courses from other department which are relevant to my research work or is there any restriction on the courses which grad students can take? fuzzylogician Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 You need to ask them that. We can tell you what generally happens in our programs but that will have very little bearing on what you will be allowed to do at your program (and you haven't even told us what that is).
Cookie Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 (edited) You must take at least the minimum # of required courses within your discipline (in your case, check with your academic advisor), normally its more than half of the total required. In my case: I took 4 chemistry courses, taking Physics and will take Computer Sciences in those respective departments. Edited February 23, 2014 by heartshapedcookie
AKJen Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Depends entirely on the program/discipline/school. We have three required courses. The rest of the 20 required credits must be relevant to your research, but there doesn't seem to be limits on what program/discipline they must be from. Of course, other departments in the school might have limits on the amount of students from outside the department can take each course, but again, this varies from school to school and program to program.
