How did I miss this topic?  Congrats to those who have made it into UTD! I managed to make it onto the wait list the first time, but didn't get picked up. I really want to go there!

I was accepted a while back to the UTD Speech Pathology program, and since I'm an out of field student I'll be coming this summer. I'd love to find an apartment and a roommate or two for either summer or the fall, and I'm so excited to start the program!

I will throw this out there for everyone, but I am also looking for a roommate for summer! I am looking to live in upper east side in the village which is brand new and a little pricier than some places. I think rent for two people is 1800 (900 each). I am open to living other places too, probably in the village.

Yes, they had 700 applicants this year so it's taking a long time to sort through! Best of luck to you!

You (or anyone else here) wouldn't happen to know what's going on with Psych Sciences PhD apps, would you? Did the Brain and Behavioral sciences get a ton of applicants to their other MS programs (psych, neuroscience, etc) and so sorting through them is delaying post- interview PhD admissions? It's 5 weeks post-interview - I'm less optimistic, but I just want to know.

I'm considering UTD for SLP next spring, but I'm a little intimidated - 700 apps? How many do they normally get? And what perentage of students are admitted? :/

Also, how did you find out there were 700 apps? Is there some sort of a book guide with admission stats to SLP?

You will be notified by email or postal mail if you're accepted! I did not check a portal, and didn't see my offer of admission online until I created a NetID and logged onto Galaxy. I had to email someone at UTD to do this! If someone else found out differently, please correct me!

Slp92, no Dr. Stillman told me there were 700 applicants when I found out I was accepted. 90 get in for fall and summer combined, which they consider one term. Hope this helps!

After my third application attempt to UTD, my track record with UTD is now: 1 waitlist, 1 rejection and 1 acceptance!

I will start this summer and could not be happier. I live about 35 miles northeast of Callier Dallas, fairly close to UT Richardson campus. Please let me know if anyone starts a FB page!

Toonces, YAY!

DId your status change on the portal first, or did you get the letter first? And I wonder why some people get emails and some get snail mail?

That's amazing to hear, congratulations!!! :) Hearing that gives me hope. If I don't get accepted for this cycle, I will certainly try again for spring.

Congratulations Toonces!! I bet you are super thrilled! This is my first application attempt, and I'm still waiting to hear back. It's good to know you kept at it and succeeded! It gives me hope too, like it does for daisynic. Only, I don't think I can reapply for spring term if I don't make this cut since I'm coming from out-of-field... am I right? / anyone know for sure?

I'm pretty sure (but I could be wrong) that you can still apply for spring! The reason I say that is because on their website they mention that out-of-field students are not put into a separate program; the out-of-field and COMD students work together. So I would think that means you can also apply for spring! As long as the classes you need are offered. Or, you could take the pre-req classes at UTD as a non-matriculated student in the fall and apply for spring. I would double check, but that is just my guess :)

Good Luck to You!!

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

artsyrunnergirl, I am going straight into the program this summer. I fully completed my B.S. in SPAU at UTD prior. Yes, please do let me know if you hear of a group started!

wishingwishing, I forgot to look on the portal the day before the letter came, so I'm not sure which came first. I was surprised by the letter, was expecting an email for some reason.

Quinn, I have not heard of a limitation on applications for out-of-field folks, but that doesn't tell you much, I apologize. I can say that I've heard it's not a bad idea to gain some experience and even an additional rec letter when re-applying after a denial. Submitting the exact same experience/data on your app might not help. I decided to reapply the second time after making the wait list prior. I hope this helps!

I can tell you that Dr. Stillman appreciates thoughtful email questions (that are relevant to the field) and not blatantly asking about your status. When the emails are professional and genuine in tone/subject matter, they show him you have continued interest and give your application additional recognition. I wouldn't send more than one unless he opens a dialogue, though.

Best of luck, I really hope you all end up at UT Dallas, the faculty and practicum opportunities are wonderful.

UTD does not allow you to take pre-req's there unless you are already admitted. I think it says it on their website now - they revamped it in the last few months.

Congrats Toonces!  I am sending you a PM!

Quinn, I know for sure that they admit leveling students all three semesters!

Thanks for the advice Toonces, and the added info wishingwishing and tex_hart!! I am relieved to know that I can apply again soon if it doesn't work out this time. (but I REALLY hope to get in this term!)

I knew applying for grad SLP was going to be competitive, but I don't think I quite realized by how much! --sometimes I feel a bit out of the loop coming from out-of-field... aside from ASHA's website and the program site, does anyone know of other helpful resources for interested pre-SLPs? Really, anything SLP related such as good books, articles, or websites, ect. - Im craving to learn!! LOL

Quinn, I'm compiling SLP blogs, Pinterest boards and websites I find. If I can get some of it together in a Word Doc, I can send it to you. Want to PM me your email address?

Also, check Amazon for a book called "Survival Guide for the Beginning Speech-Language Clinician (2004, Susan Moon Meyer.) I thought it was worth the splurge!

Toonces, I'd also love to see the list of things you come up with! I'm really excited to start learning about the field and assessment, since as an out of fielder I already feel a little behind. I found a blog a while back with a pretty cool list of reading sources if anyone is interested:
