*Quinn* Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 tristannecaroline, I just started skimming through the link you shared... Its awesome! Thanks for sharing and good luck at UTD when you start!!
daisynic Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Toonces, I'd also love to see the list of things you come up with! I'm really excited to start learning about the field and assessment, since as an out of fielder I already feel a little behind. I found a blog a while back with a pretty cool list of reading sources if anyone is interested:https://slpecho.wordpress.com/2013/05/20/slp2b-summer-reading-list/ Thanks for sharing!

Toonces Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Hey guys, I got my rejection via the galaxy portal today. Just wanted to update you guys! Ill definitely try again next year! I think it was my GREs that screwed me up :[ Good luck all! I really hate to hear this for you, I can definitely relate. I think you're being very practical by re-visiting the GRE. Also, if it helps, here's my tip for improving your GRE Verbal score-obtain a list of GRE words (available in many GRE study books, free online and in flash cards at the bookstore. If you can memorize the full definitions, that's great. Since that's tough for anyone, try to at least memorize whether the word has a positive or negative meaning. The ugly words come up in the reading comprehension paragraphs and the "which word fits the sentence best" section. If you can tell by the context of the sentence around the ugly word that it means something positive/negative, it can be just enough to help you eliminate some of the answers. Don't give up!

I checked my portal randomly. They never emailed me. I just saw that they updated it to "deny" instead of "thank you for your aapplication..." you will probably hear from them soon daisy! Thanks for the encouraging words Toonces. It looks like you read the Princeton review haha. They taught me that trick in the book. But I'm not good at standardized testing. Time seems to be my enemy no matter how hard I try ; (

I think it was my GREs that screwed me up :[ Good luck all! Jennifer, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you this time. Though, I am glad you're not giving up -- I'll be retaking my GRE too if I don't get in, and if it helps you, we could become study buddies! Also, good luck on your upcoming interview with Loma Linda! Best wishes to you!!

It looks like you read the Princeton review haha. They taught me that trick in the book. But I'm not good at standardized testing. Time seems to be my enemy no matter how hard I try ; ( I took an online prep course in September, which I think helped SO much. It was a live class with a teacher, and there were people from all over the US in the online classroom. If you had to miss a live session, there were recorded sessions you could watch or you could just watch them for supplemental studying. It was a little expensive, but I think it was worth it (I spent way more on grad applications this year ). The teacher was amazing and really encouraging. She would even send out e-mails to make sure you were doing homework and studying, if you wanted to be held accountable (if not - she wouldn't send it, you had to ask). She suggested doing the "Pomodoro Study Technique" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique) which I now use for other things, which is super helpful! She sent me a study schedule for the GRE and if you would like, I can PM it to you! Wishing you the best of luck!
artsyrunnergirl Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Guys I officially decided UTD! I am starting in the summer, and I can't wait to meet you. I visited Dallas Saturday through yesterday (Tuesday). No, its not a outdoor paradise, haha, but what can you expect from a huge city? There is SO much to do, and traffic wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I am going to be living in the Lakes in the Village. It isn't too far from White Rock Lake and the Dallas Arboretum! Toonces, I would love it if you sent the resource list you were compiling to me!! @chinkspeech so sorry to hear that. I think the GRE scores do play a larger role in admissions than anyone wants to admit, which really stinks. I have friends with a double major in Spanish and CSD as undergrads with 4.3 GPA, internship and clinical experience, and average GRE scores (300ish) and they have only received rejections! It is so frustrating, and unfair in my opinion. I took the GRE three times, and my score went up 7 points from the first to the third time I took it. I wasted a lot of time trying to learn new vocab, and I really don't think it helped. What was ultimately the most helpful was just taking practice tests. I would buy the official ETS book and take all the practice tests in that book, as well as the 2-3 offered on the computer. The best test prep company for the GRE by FAR in Manhattan Prep, but you really have to be committed to studying. They have several books (I think 8) that cover every topic on the GRE. The cool thing is, if you buy just one of them, you get an access code for six more practice tests online with explanations. I bought three of their books and used the online practice tests. The key is to review every mistake before taking another practice test. I took probably 8 practice tests in studying, and it definitely helped me!! I know several people who were accepted the second time the applied for grad school. Good luck to you!!!

*Quinn* Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Just found out I didn't make the cut this round. I am not surprised given the level of competition, but I am disappointed. Congratulations to all you who have been accepted and thank you for sharing your advice and experiences. It really meant a lot to me to know I was not alone, and I think it helped to soften the blow because I know it's possible to get accepted after multiple attempts. This was my first and only application attempt, but it won't be my last! I am going to find ways to strengthen my application and reapply for the spring term. Best of luck to everyone who may still be waiting! danielle90 1
