Montreal123 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 And this suspense and uncertainty are torturing me, especially given the fact that this is my first choice. Can we do something (like sending an additional letter detailing our interest, as some websites recommend) to highlight our interest? The department gets only 12 candidates per year and quite a lot of people are already in the waitlist!
victorydance Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 It's just a waiting game, not much you can do at this point. What are your research interests?
Montreal123 Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 It's just a waiting game, not much you can do at this point. What are your research interests? Hi there, Comparative politics (Middle Eastern politics).
victorydance Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Is McGill your first choice because of Rex Brynen?
Montreal123 Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) Is McGill your first choice because of Rex Brynen? Well, because of him and a few other professors that I can work with if he is not available. It appears to be one of the few universities in Canada for Middle Eastern political economy. What is your first choice and research interest? Edited March 4, 2014 by Montreal123
victorydance Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) Yeah, Medani does quite a bit on political economy. Although he doesn't seem to publish as much as he used to. The Institute of Islamic Studies is pretty good at McGill, actually probably one of the best in North America. I am not applying for grad schools until next fall. I study political economy and Latin American political parties. First choices are probably Cornell and Princeton. Edited March 4, 2014 by HopefulComparativist
Raketa Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Montreal123 -- How did you find out that you were waitlisted? Did somebody e-mail you?
Montreal123 Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 (edited) Montreal123 -- How did you find out that you were waitlisted? Did somebody e-mail you? Well, the lady working at the admissions said if you have neither been refused, nor accepted by now, then you are waitlisted. You will hear a definite answer on March 25th! And a lot of people are waitlisted! A lot! Are you in the same situation for McGill? Edited March 6, 2014 by Montreal123
Raketa Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I just read on a different thread that the committee is only scheduled to meet on March 11th.
Montreal123 Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 I just read on a different thread that the committee is only scheduled to meet on March 11th. I think you're talking about Master's applications. Mine is about PhD
Raketa Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Maybe it is regarding Master's. I am surpised they did not send official waiting list notifications.
Montreal123 Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 Maybe it is regarding Master's. I am surpised they did not send official waiting list notifications. That is what I was expecting as well, but the lady said you can simply assume that you're in the waitlist if you haven't heard anything as of yet, which is really strange! I think I have lost my hope of being admitted! If I did, it would simply be a miracle. There're about 50 people in the waitlist! This is just nuts! I have never seen this in any programme
Montreal123 Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 Have you tried messaging them via uApply? Well, I talked to the lady who responds to the messages in UApply!
Raketa Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I see, thanks. Well, we'll just have to be patient I suppose...
CarefreeWritingsontheWall Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 As a current McGill student, I can tell you that we're just finishing up our break. Both MA and PhD candidates haven't been notified yet within the department (at least this was the sense I got when I was talking admissions with my advisor who's involved in the process). They're late this year because of budget meetings and really bad weather. You should all start hearing back this week. :]

That is the information that I have
victorydance Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 ^ This is correct, they have already given acceptances to Ph.D. students. Don't lose hope. I got put on the wait list at McGill and I got in (it was for undergrad so different ball game, but the general point still stands).

I will wait for the 11th with impatience! Not the end of the world as I have already been admitted to UdeM for PhD (my second choice) with a 20K funding.

hexenkid Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 @Carefree: Do you know the typical funding package for new MA's? Are TAships guaranteed for all incoming MA's as well? I got a nice offer elsewhere and I'm wondering if McGill can/ would be likely to match or come close to it. In other words, are they open to negotiation?
