smartypants14 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what i can do in terms of volunteering. I was looking into volunteering with the deaf/blind. I was also thinking of maybe an after school tutor or counseling grieving children. Thanks
lgwslp Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 If you know ASL (American Sign Language) I am sure there are many opportunities everywhere to volunteer with the deaf. I have members that come to my church and they sign to the few deaf members we have each week. I would google programs in your area or call around and see if there are any opportunities. As for tutoring, you can try care.com for your area and they list lots of tutoring opportunities, or maybe talk to a school and see if they have opportunities available. Just do some research! Find something you're interested in and get involved!
ballerina18 Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 My suggestion is to research programs where you would be interested in volunteering and personally reach out to individuals who already work at that program/university/clinic/hospital. I have found that when you personally contact the director, SLP, audiologist, or researcher they are much more interested in discussing your interests and finding a place for you at their establishment. Good luck!
mollypaget Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I want to work in schools when I'm an SLP so next year I'm going to contact the SLPs of schools in the nearest school district and ask if I can volunteer/shadow them and help them out. My friend did that last year.
