lapis-lazuli Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I've just found this website so I may be misunderstanding something... but here are my questions. I have applied to and was rejected from the Ph.D program in Columbia. I then had my application transferred to the terminal master's program in Political Science. I have not received any decisions from the admission committee yet. On the Q&A's of the Columbia Poli Sci page (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/polisci/grad ... ssion.html), it states the following; "Decision notices are NOT given out over the phone or via e-mail. If you have not received a notification of admission or rejection by July 1, please contact the department then, but not before." So I still had my hopes up. When I used the "results search" on this website, however, I've found that many people have already been accepted, and that they have received their decisions "via E-mail." Am I right to assume that all the acceptance are by now sent out? And how is it that these people are receiving their decisions via e-mail despite what is being said on the website? Having denied admissions to all PhD programs, this is one of my last hopes (another, wait list on Fletcher, MALD). I would really appreciate your help guys!
junebug62 Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 July 1? Geez that does seem late...I suppose if they only just transferred your app its possible they haven't had to to review all the other transferred MA apps. Still, tons of people ignore those "don't call us" guidelines and badger the adcoms on the phone. They probably just tell folks that to discourage everyone from calling them all the time. I'd ignore that and call them anyway if you are that concerned. You could phrase it as "oh just wanted to make sure all my materials were in place since my app was transferred and stuff" and at least get a status update from them that they are working on it.
lapis-lazuli Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 Junebug62: Hmm... I've thought that it would be rude to call them up since it clearly says not to call before July 1, and I don't want to give them a bad impression... but I guess that is a possibility. All the more so since I'm applying from Tokyo... Thanks for the tip!
Euthyphro Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I'm on the PhD waiting list at Columbia and still haven't heard, though they said a decision would be made "on or around" April 15th.
lapis-lazuli Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 Euthyphro: Then I could be on the same boat as you, albeit you're on a better seat! I really do hope to get the decision soon even if it's a rejection. I've been waiting way too long, bad for my heart. On a side note... I applied to the same schools as you did too. Same mistake, aimed too high...
Euthyphro Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 I'm going to email Monday if I don't hear anything. Let's hope Columbia comes to the rescue for both of us!
lapis-lazuli Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 Just received the acceptance via email!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...phew.
lapis-lazuli Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 Thanks I hope you'll hear from them soon too!
jody01 Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 I'm really interested in PS master's programs, especially the ones at Columbia and MIT. Do you guys mind sharing advice you may have? Any information on what GPA is necessary to get into either programs would be really helpful. Thanks!
