galatea Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 So what exactly happens with FAFSA? I fill out the form...submit it...get a report back and an ECF...then what happens? Do I now wait for the university financial aid office to reply back? Should I contact someone? How long does this process take?
TKassis Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Here's what happens. You financial aid office will determine what type of financial aid you will receive... including any loans you are entitled to. They will send you something called an 'award letter', this letter is required to apply for federal loans. When you receive your award letter it will state how much in loans you are qualified to take out so then you apply to your bank of preference. My university for example sends out these letters in June. You have to ask your financial aid office when they send them out. You can't really apply for your loans until you have that letter in hand. Hope that helps.
Bogota Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I tried searching, but I apologise if this question has been asked and/or answered before. When I received my EFC, I had a C next to it, apparently because I had never registered with the Selective Service. Since I didn't arrive in the US until after I was 27, I was exempt from doing so. The FAFSA website instructed me to call SSS, and so I did. They asked me to send a letter of Status Request, providing proof that I was exempt from registering. I have sent such letter, and I believe all the documentation I included should suffice (copy of my passport with entry stamps and so on), so I should receive a status letter soon-ish (4-6 weeks apparently). My question is, once said letter arrives, do I need to bring it to the FinAid office at my new school, or do I need to send it on to the FAFSA people? Has anybody else here been in this situation before? any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
