Francophile1 Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Hello, ALL Can people in the Comp. Lit departments comment on what do you teach? Do you get to teach languages or just comp.lit classes?
ExponentialDecay Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 My department is small, so the comp. lit professors do teach languages, but many of the language departments have lecturers to teach the languages as well. Comp Lit here isn't a department; it's a program. So the new hires are expected to be able to teach the language and the literature of a specific region, rather than just theory.
smellybug Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 We teach English comp, world literature, and a language if we are able/want to.
ICanHazPhdPreez? Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I've heard that at some comp lit programs, teaching isn't guaranteed. So you're up against English PhD students and national lit PhD students for TA positions. Anybody have insights into whether or not that's true? (I'm deciding between Comp Lit and English, and would love some guidance!)
smellybug Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 Our funding is guaranteed for at least five years. I would research this and not accept any offers without this guarantee.
