Sunshine5535 Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Boy oh boy, do I need help! Fast version of my complicated story: for the past 3 years I have been applying to programs in Speech Pathology. My background is not in the same field, but my grades are decent, I volunteered in different related settings, and took pre-requisite classes and did well in them. I also have been working as a teacher for the past two years, now in a school for learning disabilities. However, up until this year none of this did the trick and got me into any schools. I've applied locally and far, and now FINALLY after so much time I have been admitted to a school!!!! I am still waiting on 2 schools but I am super excited nonetheless!!!! On the flip side, over the past year I have discovered another field through my work that I thought I would also really like: school counseling. I love what they do and how great a resource they are for children. I decided I had to be prepared in case I was rejected yet again from Speech and find another interest and applied. I was accepted at one school and recently interviewed at another! My problem is, I keep hearing the field of School Counseling is very very hard to secure a job in and I really don't want to waste my time and money in a program that will not give me a solid career. Even though I do like it and am interested. Speech has always been my first choice and it certainly has a wonderful career at the end, although the school I have been accepted to is a bit far away and would require a life change. I just feel like my head is going to explode - I want to make a good decision for myself and do what makes me happy but I am so confused! Can anyone help?
unbrokenthread Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 It sounds like you've done way more research on SP than school counseling. Why not do some more research on the latter before you decide? I know nothing about either field, so I can't give you any advice that's grounded in the context you need. But I *can* tell you that more data (on the two programs, on your potential move at the one school you mentioned, on your fit with professors (if applicable), etc.) can only help you.
