starofdawn Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Hey everyone, I have been admitted to 2 MS programs at great schools, and am trying to weigh my options. One school requires a thesis - and the other school does not require a thesis. Since I do not plan on pursuing a PhD, are there any benefits towards doing a thesis? Is it best to avoid a thesis, if possible?
GeoDUDE! Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 There is a large advantage: you have shown that you can carry out a significant amount of work over a long period of time. The MS with thesis is always stronger than the MS without. Go for the Thesis. Industry loves them.
Meirrin Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 It looks way better to industry if you do more for your MS than just take classes. The non-thesis option IS NOT for the benefit of industry, it's for the benefit of the university so they can take in tons of maintenance free money. A thesis MS is more work for the university, they would rather not give a crap about you and make you take classes. Do the research and get the thesis, you won't regret it.
Queenofnormandy Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I'm wondering if anyone has any input on this with regards to the humanities. I've been accepted to a program with a choice of either two paid co-op work terms, or a thesis. I'm not planning to do a PhD, and am hoping to work in the field. Should I go for work experience or expertise in a very particular aspect of the field in question?
