My daughter has been accepted to the following schools for Speech Pathology. University of Maryland, Temple, La Salle, Montclair, SUNY New Paltz (where she currently attends). She was wait listed at Emerson and Boston U.

She is really struggling with the decision of whether to stay where she is at New Paltz or make a move. Maryland is out of reach financially, and she is actually feeling that the larger research universities such as Maryland or Temple may not be as personalized an experience for her.Additionally the North Philly neighborhood is another deterrent.

Anyone have anything to offer about LaSalle or Montclair? We live in Central Jersey. Her professors at New Paltz are begging her to stay there....

I don't know how it is in Speech Pathology, but in Chemistry, unless the department is fairly sizable, it's frowned upon to do grad and undergrad at the same place...

I'm really struggling deciding between a school that is a better choice educationally (has a better reputation) versus a school that is a better choice financially (like a $40,000 better choice). In the grand scheme of things, does where you get the degree from REALLY make a difference? Any words of wisdom would be appreciated! :)

I'm also going to grad school for SLP. From what I know, I think as long as the school your going to is ASHA certified it doesn't really matter where your degree is from. Obviously, if you wanted to pursue a certain path in SLP that one of the universities you were accepted to has, then it would probably be more beneficial to you to go to that school. I also never heard that it is frowned upon for someone to go to the same grad school as their undergrad for SLP. Good luck!

I'm dealing with the same exact problem

I'm dealing with the same exact problem

I think this depends on the specifics such as how similar the two schools are, if you can see yourself completing the degree at either of them, your personal finances, and how competitive your field is for recent doctoral graduates. Personally, I'd have a hard time not following the money.
