microarray Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Make sure to check your department's stats before freaking out. For example, 50% of PhD grads in my upcoming department are tenure_track and only 2% industry. sn2 1
sn2 Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) Great point. It depends greatly by each individual department. But I think it can be a useful metric for getting a sense on the state of the field. It is also worth noting that this data is several years old and is self-reported. But in general, job prospects don't look favorable if more than half of biology graduate students still intend on pursuing academia. Also, I'm a bit shock of the 37% dropout rate. Isn't that a bit high or is this rate on par with other fields? Edited April 16, 2014 by sn2
No Coffee Plz Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Nationwide doctoral program attrition rate stands at about 40-50%, with the humanities having more drop-outs. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/college-inc/2010/04/nearly_half_of_doctorates_neve.html The actual report http://www.fgereport.org/rsc/pdf/ExecSum_PathForward.pdf elanorci and sn2 2
