CS:TU Delft (Netherlands) vs. TKK (Finland) vs. KTH (Sweden)

Recommended Posts

Hi, all.

I'm a undergraduate student studying computer science in korea (obviously, south korea).

For last few days, I have received admissions from TU Delft and TKK(Helsinki University of Technology), and I am waiting for the admission result from KTH which is expected to come out in a week or so.

I applied for master's program in computer science in TU Delft, and for TKK I applied for master's programme in machine learning and data mining. For KTH, my application is for master's program in distributed system under computer science department.

In korea, it is such a difficult task to gather information on european universities, as most professors and instuctors obtained their degrees in either united states or korea.

I hope you guys may help me out here. Which one is better among three universities regarding computer science? My criteria mostly concern the "research capability(or achievement)" of the university and the chance of participating in research activities as a master's student. Also, I'm currently thinking about furthering my study through ph.d after obtaining the master's degree.

Any comment from you would be most valuable to me. Thank you :D

I don't know how many applicants here would be able to provide advice since the majority of discussion is geared to schools in the US. Hopefully you will get some more feedback.

I am familiar with the Helsinki Institute of Technology and the KTH RIT in Sweden and both are very good schools. If I had my pick, I would choose the Helsinki Institute of Technology. The school has a lot of history and is very respected in the field in Europe. Studies there will also position you well for the PhD since that is your goal, and they have tons of research projects to boot that you may be able to get involved in.

I don't know too too much about KTH's programs; but I know that they have many opportunities to do exchanges at different universities in Europe and the US.

You won't notice too much difference in cost of living in both places. Sweden may have slightly more to do in terms of entertainment than Finland from my experience in both places. And Swedish will definitely be the easier of the two to learn (I dare not go into my experience being stuck in a part of Finland where no one speak English). At least Swedish is also spoken in Finland.

I don't know how much it helps, but either way you will make out fine. As I said before, I would lean more towards Helsinki.

I've heard many great things about TU Delft. I was actually thinking about applying there myself to a different program. Unfortunately, that's about all I can really tell you. From my vacation, Sweden seemed like a much better place to live as compared to Finland, but you can't beat the Netherlands.

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

I think your answers are about all I can get from any forum whose running language is English. They are, however, much more than what I can get in Korea (I just cannot find any professor in CS department who did his/her degree in any place other than the united states).

Thank you again.

I guess I'll just wait one more week for the result from KTH, and I will just have to throw a dice, after all.

Although I've almost lost any hope for getting more information, more comment would be really appreciated.

Hi All

I have admits in MSc, Computer Science from the following universities --

1. ETH Zurich

2. University of Helsinki

3. TKK

4. Uppsala

I'm going to go with ETH Zurich, but I need to keep a backup option in case I don't get Swiss visa. Could you guys pl. tell me which is the better university among Helsinki, TKK and Uppsala for Computer Science? Or (surprise, surprise) is ETH Zurich not the no. 1 option anyway? Is there one among the other three that is better than ETH for CS?

Thanks!
