whereismyanswer Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 So I applied to a program back in February. I figured I would hear by now. I had called graduate admissions before and left 2 messages as well as emailed. No one ever got back to me. Finally today I reached someone in person who told me that no decision had been made yet and I could hear this week or next or later... basically the guy had no idea when I might hear. I'm coming up on the deadline of the other program I want to participate in (its online as opposed to on-campus like this other one is) and getting nervous about not hearing. I feel like I've made a fool of myself now by calling up and asking, and even now leaving a message to the Director of Graduate Admissions asking her if she might know and stupidly saying I was coming up on deadlines and was waiting to hear from them (hopefully implying that they are my top, top choice). I feel now I have made a fool of myself asking but... it's almost May! This is one of the most ridiculous process I have been through. I don't understand how it's almost May and no decision has been made! The deadline for the other program to register is May 1st! Who do they think they are just leaving me hanging like this? I don't know if anyone else can tell but I am ever so not slowly going insane. I'm worried now that I just ruined my chances because its going to go down the grapevine from admissions that I want a decision soon and that they are just gonna go "ok well lets rush this and tell her no if she wants an answer so bad." I am going to scream if my brain doesn't shut the hell up. The worst part is, is that I know they set out acceptances in mid-March already. So how did mine not get a decision?
fuzzylogician Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 You didn't make a fool of yourself. Calling and leaving messages at this point is perfectly acceptable and what you said also sounds reasonable. I'm sorry this is happening to you; the wait can be really awful. I hope you hear back soon.

I am going to scream if my brain doesn't shut the hell up. The worst part is, is that I know they set out acceptances in mid-March already. So how did mine not get a decision? You actually did a good thing. Letting schools know you have other deadlines is a good idea. Either they want you and this will make them realize they need to move more quickly to secure you, or they don't want you and now know that you have other options so they can feel less guilty (do they feel guilt? who knows! ;P) about informing you of a decision that was inevitable. I firmly believe that no school is going to base acceptance/rejection on whether they want to clear you off their table faster. Giving the committee a nudge is akin to ripping a bandaid off--the wound will be healed or it won't be healed, but I'd rather not feel every hair coming out. If there was a first round of acceptances last month, you've been put on a waitlist without being informed. Not unusual... And if you're on a waitlist and they get back to you and tell you it's probably not going to have movement before your other deadlines, it wasn't going to have had movement whether or not you tried to follow up. gl!
Heinrich Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I'm in a very similar situation, and it's a bit frustrating. I called two weeks to see if they had made a decision or if I had been waitlisted, and they told me my application had not been reviewed. When I called back yesterday morning, they said they were going to make decisions on the last group at 10am, and we would know their decision by that evening. It's been a day and a half later, and I still haven't heard anything! I wonder if I should email someone to get something in writing or if I should wait a few more days. It's been four months since I turned in my app.
J2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I feel the same way. I submitted my application for early review (in December) for a Feb 1 deadline (which then got pushed back to March 1). I didn't hear anything until 2 weeks ago when I got an interview. They said I should hear back by last Friday but still nothing. It's definitely a source of anxiety because so many other life decisions ride on this school's decision. Good luck...hopefully you hear back soon (hopefully we all do!)
icedtea Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) I am in a very similar position as well. You didn't make a fool of yourself. It's almost May. You could leave a drunken message in May and still wouldn't make a fool of yourself. All protocol is out of the window once it's May. Edited April 29, 2014 by icedtea
raygon84 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Same here. Waiting for 4 months now. Emailed three times asking what was the status of my application which was supposed to be decided this Monday. Still no response. I'm getting really angry at this point.
Psychoanalyst31 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) I sent mine in in September. I was granted an interview within the first week of March, then recived another interview last week, and am still waiting on a decision. Edited April 30, 2014 by Psychoanalyst31
eriwriter Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I'm also in a similar situation. I might have heard back sooner if the college didn't lose my transcript and one of my letters of rec, which they eventually found after two weeks, and that was a month ago. I'm calling Friday if I don't hear by the end of tomorrow. It's frustrating when everything is in on time and setbacks like this happen. I don't think it was wrong to call if you have other deadlines waiting.
Heinrich Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I have a few updates since my original post on Tuesday. I decided to call again on Wednesday, and the records coordinator was really apologetic for taking longer than she anticipated. The good news is that she told me over the phone that I was accepted! I got my official acceptance email today, and I'm so excited. I work for Undergraduate Admissions at the university where I got my bachelor's degree, and we don't get annoyed when people call us asking about their application status. Now that I'm on the other side (as the applicant), I don't know why I was so hesitant to call them until this week. PhDerp and Vene 2

imjoara Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I'm going through the same situation. I mean, do they ever bother to consider a lot of other important matters such as applying for external funding programs depend on their decisions? It's been almost four month since I submitted my full application and no response. I asked twice about my status and the woman whom I wrote to was always so apologetic, which makes me feel a touch better at this point. But that doesn't mean I hear back at the point she predicted. Oh well, I really don't know what's happening and this is beyond my understanding. All I can say is.. let's keep calm and carry on. Let's hope for the best!
icedtea Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 (edited) Do professors use those 21st century phones in their offices where they can see how many missed calls they have or the number the calls came from? Because the call count at my POI's phone from a certain phone number might have crossed into the 'disturbing' territory by now. Edited May 5, 2014 by icedtea
dchabs Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I'm in the same boat. I turned in my app 1/15 and still nothing. The program I'm applying to updated their website for fall 2014 applications and said that they will now be reviewing applications through june 1st or until the cohort is full. I've emailed multiple people with no response and when I called I got an auto voice message saying to email them. Needless to say, I am extremely frustrated

You're assuming that they even bother to look at missed calls;) Odds are, they have old phones from the 90s with no call display. My desk phone at work is older than me and this is par for the course for many organizations. If it ain't broke, don't throw it out!
whereismyanswer Posted May 10, 2014 Author Posted May 10, 2014 Well into the month and I still haven't heard. Haven't even got a cal back from the messages I left at admissions. Officially pissed and may be demanding my application fee back. This is ridiculous. I already had to put a deposit down for another program so I wouldn't lose my spot. Their due date was May 1st, which after exploring the school that I haven't heard from website, was also their due date for deposits. How do I not have an answer by now?
Canela Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Well, we're both!, My application status still "In review". My application started in October 2013 and it's may and I don't have any news yet. I think this is extremely painful and unkind . PD: I'm from South America if I get accepted, I do not have idea how to deal with visa process times, I'm going Crazy!
