Grad school must-haves?

Recommended Posts

The move is far away (though 4 months doesn't seem like a long time when I think of all the things I need to get done!), but I'm already stressing over the things I'll need in grad school. I've never lived in a dorm before, and since I'm opting for University housing (which I have already been selected for) I want to know what are some must-haves for away-from-home university life!

Also, what kind of things am I better off buying abroad vs. buying here and taking with me?

I'm such a hoarder I wish I could pack up my room with me and go!!!

I was thinking maybe we could compile a community list of things that are grad school must-haves :)

I think generic things like kitchen stuff, school supplies, etc can be purchased wherever. You might be better off saving packing money and trying to find a second hand store to buy stuff.

If you are going abroad for school then I would focus on bring things that you will miss from home like pictures of friends or those decorations that you have had up for years that will make your place feel homey. For example, I have a huge warm blanket that Ive used on my bed for 10 years and decorations that I got traveling abroad in various places. Ive also been using the same bookbag since undergrad that Im sort of attached to. For me, these kinds of things are what I would want to use space bringing with me if I were to go abroad for school. I think Id get homesick without them!

As far as supplies that you actually need for grad school... I dont think I could get by without my coffee pot, laptop, backpack, highlighters, pencils, and those multisubject spiral notebooks so that I have to keep track of a bunch of seperate notebooks for each class. Other than that, I cant think of much that you cant manage without. A printer/scanner would be convenient but it sounds like youll be on or close to campus and could print there if you dont want to buy one.

Give up as many books as you can bear to be parted with. They end up taking up so much space, and the library will have whatever you need, most of the time.

I'm in the same boat! I will only be able to take 2 large suit cases with me to my campus apartment. I don't know if I will be able to take everything I want. I think I will buy my kitchen needs when I arrive to my new place as pots and pans can take up weight and too much space in the luggage. I think I will take only must-haves in the suitcases.
