cagbal Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Hi, I'm an Electrical Engineering senior in Turkey. My GRE scores are Q:162, V:140 and 87 Toefl. My GPA is 3.57 and my rank in my department is 3, and 13 in my university.I applied to several Top 20 universities, but I have been declined. So, do you have any suggestion to me with this stats? Sorry for this kind of post, but I'm really in a hard situation. I don't know what to do. Thank you. cagbal 1
spunky Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 (edited) not trying to be mean but from a foreign student to another (actually ex-foreign student) your GREs and your TOEFL score are just WAY too low. i'm assuming the TOEFL of 87 is total TOEFL score? that barely places you on slightly over the 60th percentile. and the verbal on the GRE is WAY too low. to the best of my knowledge, being on the top 90th percentile for the Quant GRE score is also important to have, which you didn't seem to have got either (but you were very close so i wouldn't worry about that one). my advice would be to improve on your English first before planning to apply again. hj2012 Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Agreed with the above poster. Improve your GRE scores and broaden your range of schools outside the top 20. Is this for a PhD or an MA?
DeepSaklani Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I also Agree with other member. Your quant score is ok. However, your English scores are drastically low. You should try improving the English scores. Here are few tips which you can use. 1. Understand how vocabulary works in context. You should look up for example sentence online. 2. Use lists of prefixes, roots, suffixes, common mistakes, similar words, etc. 3. Read articles which are scholarly, dense, and challenging. And remember whenever you encounter words you don’t know, look those words up and try to get a better sense of how they function in context. Apart from this, their is an alternate way of improving vocabulary through flashcard. Some of the GRE providers are providing vocab flash card on Mobile App like Magoosh, Gradestack etc. Also you can try reading as many books as possible. Try to memorize as many words as possible.. The best part is you can memorize vocab using flashcard on the go. Once you have the descent scores in Vocab, you will surely get a call from the colleges where you are applying.
