BEEFSQUATCH Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Does anyone know which programs (globally) are good for studying the likes of Kant, Rawls, and other analytic moral and political philosophers? 'Good' may be qualified in terms of 1. People/resources available 2. Department culture (helpful faculty, tight grad student community, etc.) 3. Placement (especially for theorists!) 4. Quality of life in general area where college is situated I've been told that places to consider would include Oxford, Toronto, UBC, Columbia, Chicago, and a whole bunch of other US programs, but don't really know where to begin seriously looking. I'm also considering that phil departments may be better for pursuing these research interests, although better suited ones are generally those in Commonwealth countries and that somewhat problematizes job prospects in poli sci departments -- especially in the US. Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Penelope Higgins Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 For analytic style work in political theory of the kind you seem to describe, Princeton and Oxford are the strongest departments. Other good places in the US besides some of the places you mention include Harvard, NYU and Brown. I don't see Chicago or Columbia as being places to do this sort of work. Outside the US, the LSE has a strong group. And more generally, most departments in England except Cambridge do analytic work in political theory. In Canada, Magill might also be a very good option; perhaps better for the style of work you're interested in than the other Canadian options you list.

Thanks so much for the response! :-) Would you also happen to have any information on placements as well as existing faculty working on this kind of research, for each of these programs you've suggested?
cooperstreet Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Would you also happen to have any information on placements Placements? For theory?
Penelope Higgins Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 You can find a lot of the info you seek on department websites. I suggest you do some research of your own.

Yep, placements for theory grads from these departments. It'd be good to hear directly from other people in the field :-) Edited July 1, 2014 by BEEFSQUATCH
