ixi55 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I"m a senior and should be graduating this May with a BS. But I failed a class that I needed in order to graduate. I'm accepted to grad school for the fall semester. The thing is...I was wondering if I would be allowed to retake the one class that I need while still be a grad student. I know I won't have a degree yet...but I don't want to wait a year because of one class. So, after finishing the last class that I need, I would graduate with a BS during the fall semester. Does that make sense? Does anyone have any experience with things like this? Thanks
royalt3240 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Can you take the class this summer? Grad schools require you to have your undergrad completed at the time you start the program.
ixi55 Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 no. It's not offered during the summer I'm so mad at myself right now...the sad thing is i didn't even have to take this class. I could have picked an easier one, but noooo I had to take this class Could I get a BA instead do you think? A BA doesn't require as much upper level classes and I've taken enough to fulfill that requirement.
royalt3240 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 As long as your grad school acceptance is not contingent on the B.S. degree that should not be a problem. The question is, do you have the right course credits for a B.A.? You need to call your academic advisor like yesterday.
ixi55 Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 I know I need to get this sorted out soon. I went to see my advisor today but he wasn't that much of a help. All he said was that I needed to retake it because it's not a passing grade. I didn't think about a BA until just a few minutes ago. I met all the required classes in my major, but I think I'm missing 2 liberal arts courses, but I should be able to take those during the summer. But I really don't know
fuzzylogician Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 You need to clear it with your grad program, but if they agree (and I assume that they will) then getting a BA seems like the best course of action for you. If you can pass 2 liberal arts courses during the summer and get your degree before the fall, you should be ok. Good luck!
ixi55 Posted May 16, 2009 Author Posted May 16, 2009 I'm going to go see my advisor this monday to talk about getting a BA instead. Hopefully I'll be able to graduate this summer. I really hate to postpone grad school because of one class. BTW, what exactly is a liberal arts course? I've taken a race class as well as several math classes. Would they be considered liberal arts?
fuzzylogician Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 BTW, what exactly is a liberal arts course? I've taken a race class as well as several math classes. Would they be considered liberal arts? Ask your adviser. She should tell you exactly what requirements you have to meet in order to get the BA and if any of the courses you took qualify for that. You wouldn't want not to be able to graduate because you relied on advice someone gave you on the internet.
