Saman Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Hi People, I have been writing my SOP for the last 15 days or so and finally sent it to some folks for review. Some of them replied and said that I didn't mention my purpose properly for pursuing 'I/O Psychology in Doctoral Program'. I didn't understand exactly what they meant ? Though in the last paragraph, I have mentioned that I want to work in applied settings as a Consultant and wants to explore my research interest further. My question is that: isn't it enough as far as purpose is concerned in SOP ? if it's not enough then what else I should add to make it seem like I have a solid purpose of pursuing PhD in the same subject. Do I have to add a story which can make it a bit flowery ? Please let me know your thoughts as I am in the last phase of my SOP. Thank you very much for your time.
BeingThere Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 (edited) You may want to ask them what they meant. Having not read your SOP, I also have no idea what they meant. I will say that if what you wrote above is all wrote in the SOP, then it is not nearly detailed enough. It's a two-part (or more) question. Why I/O psych? And why a PhD? And, thirdly, why the particular program (school)? Answer those three clearly and in enough detail so that they know you a)have spent considerable time thinking about your career path/goals; b.) have spent considerable time working toward that path/goal (e.g. undergrad research and presentations; reading on the research topics you are interested in); and c) have chosen to apply to the particular program because it aligns with a and b. But, bottom line, you will have to ask your reviewers what they meant by their comments. Edited October 15, 2014 by Bren2014
