tmiaj1 Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 So I just got my first GRE score. Verb 74%, Q 89% My gpa is relatively low. like a 3.0 but it probably will increase to 3.2 at the end of this semester. I just started to ask professors write recommendation for me and I looked through the previous year topic of application. Looks like applying early would be a good choice to increase my acceptance rate. So I am wondering how early should I apply? Also, I 'd like really hear some advice on selecting school for mph ehs program. I'd really appreciate your help Thanks a lot
soylatte5 Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Applying earlier is a good idea but I don't think it is a huge determinant in getting accepted. How you present yourself and your experiences is more important. In terms of EHS programs, I suggest looking at the coursework offered and professors' research interests. Since you only have 1-2 years for the degree, carefully selecting an advisor who can offer you a research project fitting your interests is really important - you really don't have much time to explore. Also, think through courses you that will excite you (I regretted not having known about certain courses in my last semester, part of my reason for going back to school) since many things are only offered once a year so you can easily miss opportunities. Really, time flies! Doing this research will also help you write your personal statement. You might want to even exploring other departments beyond EHS because you can do EHS work without actually getting a degree in it, EHS encompasses a variety of topic areas but the technical knowledge will mostly come from other departments such as epi, biostats, behavioral sci. Good luck!
holykrp Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 This is my first grad school application cycle so I'm certainly no expert. From what I've read, though, there is a clear advantage to applying as early as possible. It also depends on the cycle of the school; it will be more advantageous to apply early if you're applying mostly to programs that are on a rolling admissions and make decisions as applications come in. If you think you can raise your GPA above 3.0, though, I think that would be more important than submitting a couple of months earlier.
IntriguedStudent Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 If you're applying MPH, you should go ahead and get your application in ASAP. Most deadlines are at the beginning of December. Having a strong SoP and submitting early is your best chance for getting in with your stats. holykrp 1
