katanianQ Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 just a little friendly advice for when the time comes.. if you don't have a dog , cat, rabbit, bird, whatever.. I strongly recommend having a pet. I'm halfway through a huge boring and very lonely writing project and if I didn't have my dog to lie at my feet and keep me company, and occasionally whine for a walk , I'd be a lot more depressed and prob forget to leave the house. Plus then when you talk out loud, you're technically not crazy bc someone is listening.. right?? tell me im right people. Who couldn't use the extra company and unconditional love???
Minnesotan Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Plus then when you talk out loud, you're technically not crazy bc someone is listening.. right?? tell me im right people. Word! My cat and gf probably saved my sanity.
rising_star Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I found having two foster dogs which had never lived inside before to be extremely helpful for writing my thesis. (And no, I'm not being sarcastic!) It also helped to work a part-time job that had 4 hour shifts. So I'd divide my day into 4-5 hour chunks (helped that it's when the dogs had to be taken for a walk) during which I'd work, dog train, write, and relax. Though I had a crazy thesis writing thing and wrote something like 50 of the 75 pages in 3 weeks in January. Oh, and I didn't do much weekend work because my out-of-town bf would come visit. I think the time crunch + dog demands forced me to be super productive with my time.
Minnesotan Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Bah! My MA thesis was 180 pages. There was no way I was getting that done in a month! In fact,I rarely left the house for three months.
rising_star Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Mine was only 75 pages in its first draft, about 15 of which I wrote in a week in December as part of a class paper. My thesis ended up being 105 pages as my advisor kept saying I wasn't explaining enough stuff. Stupid need to put ideas and background from my head onto the page... Personally, I just find deadlines really motivating.
Minnesotan Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Haha! Damn the audience and their pitiful need for clarity. This thread really isn't going anywhere, is it?
