ohsoquiet Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I am a second year PhD student and was wondering about my eligibility for CGS ($35,000/yr). It stipulates that if you have completed between 5 and 16 months (by December 31st) you are still eligible but if you have completed between 17 and 28 months you are not. I will have completed exactly 16 months. Just wondering if anyone out there has received the CGS and was funded 35,000 for their 3rd, 4th, and 5th year in Doctoral studies.

So I'm to be funded for my 3rd, 4th, and 5th years to the tune of 35k per year. This is kind of perfect, since my program only funds through year 4. Your understanding is correct, you're eligible for the three-year span. Feel free to PM me if you want to ask for more details. Just want to say though: I strongly recommend availing yourself of any workshops/seminars/writing centres at your institution that offer help on crafting SSHRC/OGS proposals. I went to a bunch of these and it's totally worth it to have some scrutiny from generalists as well as a sense of the proposal "formula". Good luck! ETA: from last year is helpful to see how the process unfolded for people in the last round! Edited November 6, 2014 by surefire Konstantin 1
TakeruK Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 You are eligible. I applied to NSERC CGS but SSHRC CGS and NSERC CGS-D are the same in this regard. The 17 month cutoff is specifically designed so that you are eligible to apply in the fall semester of both your first and second year of your PhD since almost all Canadian programs start in September, almost all applicants will have completed 0, 4, or 16 months of their program. There might be an exception if you are in a fast track/combined MA/PhD program or if you already received funding from SSHRC or NSERC or CIHR in the past. I believe that we all have a lifetime limit of 4 years of funding in total from these 3 agencies. surefire 1
Konstantin Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 (edited) Like surefire, I applied in my second year of the Ph.D. and received a SSHRC CGS for years 3, 4, and 5. Good luck! In addition to what others have posted, here is a table for determining SSHRC CGS/Fellowship eligibility: http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/programs-programmes/fellowships/doctoral-doctorat-eng.aspx Edited November 6, 2014 by Konstantin surefire 1
ohsoquiet Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 Thanks for the response and the suggestions. I have already submitted my application but I have definitely made use of my programs workshops. They have a particularly great one where you get to sit with a SSHRC reviewer for 20 min to review your proposal. I found out from my supervisor (don't think she was supposed to tell me) that I was ranked 1st! I am very used to not getting things (undergrad GPA problems) so this was quite a nice surprise for me so I thought I would see if I was still eligible for CGS. This is great news! Thanks again. Now I play the waiting game.
