StarkResilient89 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 For some of the MPA/MPP programs, one of the optional application requirements is the submission of a video essay/skit/presentation, something along the lines of "inform the admissions committee who you are and what you are looking to achieve during your graduate study...what you do or say is up to you as long as you provide the information requested." I know that this prompt may seem pretty straightforward, and it's probably stupid of me to even ask, but does anyone have any advice or experiences with this type of thing, especially re: style, content, etc.? Since we've only got under a minute or so, I'd like to not screw anything up. Thanks! MJA87 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 (edited) There's not much to screw up: just look into the camera, speak confidently, and address the questions. I've seen schools ask for a brief video essay, but I've never seen it described as a "skit". I think it's important that the video is straightforward and shows you're a serious candidate, I wouldn't use it as an opportunity to get cute with a skit. You're applying for grad school, not to appear on a reality show. Edited December 9, 2014 by MJA87
chocolatecheesecake Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Great question! Here's my two cents. I took it as a chance to showcase the fact that I was doing a lot of traveling last year, and talked directly to the camera about why I love to travel and how that applied to what I wanted to do with public policy. I also edited in some footage I took with my camera in Taiwan, and surprisingly, an hour's worth of work on iMovie looks pretty slick! I think any way you can talk about what you want to do policy-wise and showcase your strengths and diverse talents is going to make a great video. Another note: @StarkResilient89, this doesn't apply to you as much, but for other people who may be debating whether to do the video or not, I would strongly advise it. I know some people who didn't and still got in, but there's no reason not to do it, IMHO. Whenever colleges have an "optional" essay or video or complement to your application, it's the chance to go the extra mile and really show that you want to go to this place and that you'll be a good fit. Lastly, I searched on YouTube and found quite a few great examples for Duke. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=duke+sanford+school+application+video
