this is so excruciating... telling your story to someone and hoping they like it .. better than the hundred others

Posted (edited)

Oh noo that's going to be 30 torture seconds

Yep... that's how SIPA was for me this week. I was reading a book in front of my computer and suddenly my email inbox popped up with an unread message from Columbia. Then my phone chimed at me and showed me part of the message. I about had a heart attack logging in to check the page, lol.

Now that I have an acceptance letter in my pocket, I hope it will be less nervewracking when Fletcher and the others arrive.

Guys, I just had a small nervous attack. On the system - when I displayed my scholarship application form -

"Are you applying for scholarship aid from The Fletcher School? " was blank - no yes or no displayed.

I hope this is a display/technical glitch. Do any of you have the same thing displayed?

Yep, call them today ASAP and ask. Your application must have glitched, that was a question that was asked on the application.

I call them on their busiest day? I am an EN admit - I emailed the Associate Director of Admissions who had emailed me back then.

Aaaaaah. Why now. This looked fine in Feb when I had checked.

You know they are going to issue their final decisions on institional financial aid today, right? Probably they have already made their decisions but do you really want to take a chance worth possibly tens of thousands of dollars?

I called all fine. :D They are super sweet back there at the Office :)

Btw - verbatim " decisions will be out very soon so keep an eye out for your email"

Good to hear! And great intel :D

Just checked my status on the Fletcher applicant portal and I'm in with 15k in funding, which makes my decision more difficult.

Good luck everyone!

Waitlisted. Bummed out sort of as this was my top choice, but with no work experience I expected a straight rejection. Worried though because Korbel accepted me.... and I much prefer Fletcher over Korbel, but I'm not sure what my odds at getting off the waitlist are. And I have until mid-April to tell Korbel, but Fletcher will only let us know in May... I almost wish I had been rejected instead.

Got into MIB (not MALD) with $30,000 a year funding "Emerging Markets Scholarship". Delighted. MIB is more expensive than MALD but this is still more than 50% scholarship. Time to make some tough decisions!

MALD- rejected

It was either not having international work experience and/or my GRES. I hear this is a hard program for those coming straight out of undergrad, anyway. But, it didn't hurt to try.

I was accepted with funding even though I had a clearly missing word in the very first sentence of my supplemental essay that I was worrying about for months. There is hope for us overanalyzers after all! :)

Thank god for god news, after a brutal day from HKS and WWS yesterday. Admitted to MALD with $25k in funding

All the MALD posters abouve - when you say 25k funding are you saying across 2 years or for 1 year?

What I mean is - I have been offered $13,000 each year for both years - making it $26k.

Have you got 25k per year? If so, that's awesome! Let me know please. :)

I'm not really convinced about "pitting one university against another" and negotiating funding - does it actually work? Don't the AdComs see right through it?

Yeah, so I got $25k per year, so $50k total. Which was unexpected and very welcome!

In terms of negotiating funding and the AdCom "seeing right through it" -- you have to frame it differently. You're not tricking them out of money. Once you're accepted, the school genuinely wants you. If you tell them (honestly, because they'll probably ask for proof) that you would really like to go to their school, but someone else offered you more money, they might be willing to match/revise the offer because at this point, they want you to attend. And if they say no, they're not going to rescind your acceptance / funding at that point. The worst that'll happen is that they say no....so what's the harm in nicely asking?

Obviously you should only negotiate if you genuinely would attend their school with better funding. Don't be an a-hole and waste their time, just to see what they'd be willing to give you. (I'm sure you wouldn't do that, but it's worth noting for the many readers  :)  )

Completely agree with this. Be up front, frank and polite with them. That's what I'm going to do. "I love your school and I'm grateful for the 30% scholarship, but I am still short by $_____. I have been offered a 50% scholarship by XYZ university. If you would be willing to exceed that and narrow the gap between my finances and the cost of attendance, I would be much more likely accept your offer" - or something along those lines.
