junestag Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I don't have a BA in psychology but I want to go to grad school in that subject - either phD or masters, haven't decided which yet. But I know some programs won't accept me at all and some are ok with other ba degrees...but require after admittance that you take ~4 classes (dep. on program obviously) before you can actually start your program. So my questions are this, would there be any value in my taking the Psych GRE if I think I have all the needed knowledge of the BA degree without having had taken any of the classes? What if I did very well on my psych GRE do you think they would still require me to take the prereqs? I know this would depend on the institution perhaps, but does anyone see any value in taking the psych GRE in my position and doing well in it, or will that not help me at all?
_intrigue_ Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I believe that PhD programs will definitely want to see a subject test, if you aren't a psychology major. CleverUsername15 1

If the department says that certain classes are a prerequisite, I doubt they would exempt you from those classes based on the Psych GRE. The Psych GRE could still be helpful, though. If your undergrad is not in psychology, scoring well on the Psych GRE could show potential programs that your psychology knowledge is still pretty robust. It might help with your application even if you weren't exempted from particular courses.
